Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADELMER WELLS, OF OOOPERSVILLE, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES WELLS, OF SAME PLACE.
COMPOSITION FOR GRAINING AND FINISHING WOOD.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 243,665, dated. June 28, 1881.
' Application filed March 28, 1881. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ADELMER WELLs, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the village of Ooopersville, in the county of Ottawa and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful composition of matter to be used for graining and finishing articles of wood and metal and inside wood-work in buildings and houses, of which the following is a specification.
My composition consists of the following ingredients combined, in the proportions stated, viz: five gallons furniture-varnish, one gallon fluid asphaltum, and one pint of japan. These ingredients are to be thoroughly mixed by stirring, and after standing for half an hour the composition is ready for use. In using this composition no special preparation of the surface to be covered is necessary. It acts as a filler, and is used both as a graining color and as a finish for articles of wood, such as furniture, coflins, wooden machinery, and may be used for wagons and carriages.
When used as a graining-color no painting or other preparation of the plain surface upon which it is used is necessary; neither is it necessary to varnish the work when done, as is the case when graining is done in the ordinary method.
By the use of my composition graining can 0 bedone at one-quarter of the ordinary cost, and equally well. When used for finishing no fillin g or oiling of the surface is necessary. It is applied directly to the wood, and leaves it smooth and glossy. The shade may be varied, 3 5
dark or light, by the use of more or less asphaltum, and the compound may be thinned with turpentine.
By the use of this composition furniture can be finished at less than one-half the ordinary 4o ADELMER WELLS.
