In providing an ammunition dispenser for the use of hunters I employ a two part cylindrical casing of a thickness determined by the length of cartridges of a particular caliber to be accommodated which may be made of light weight a eviceorithis charaotergatwo part casing con- '5 Glaims. composition. In this casing Iyjournal a maga zine :orcarrier 'having on its periphery recesses or 'pocketsifor receiving single cartridges, :and render it operable. to present'them successively to an aperture in the casing through which the magazinefmay 'beloaded in :the first instance and :from which the cartridges rmay :be'subsequently 'extraoted'singly.
*To the above ends, therefore, in carrying out 'my invention l provide a'casing havingrfront and rear portions. The rear portioncomprises;apanel E1 havinga-scircular rimll and :carrying inte- 'ri'orlyia central stud-for post 'I 2 having an "outer threaded endand a-squaredrsportion [2 .Exteriorly of the panel 10 is an offset 'keeper- .13
through which a belt or strap may be .passed by means of which the device may be attached in a convenient position to a persons waist. The front of thecasing is similarly 'constructed with apanel 14 apertured at the center to fit theangu- 'larportion or stud l2,-and carrying a marginal flange IB which surrounds the rim ll. Theetwo parts of the casing are detachably secured :together'bvmeans of a knurlednut 16 on the "threaded endofthepost l2.
The casing is provided on itsupper'side with a transverse opening I! formed .by cutting away portions of the overlapping flanges or rims 'II and =15 and notching the front and rear panels 10 and I4. On these panels I locate at one side of the opening projections I8I9 which are in a'lineme'nt on the twoparts of the casing and are -formed by striking up or displacing in theforming dies small portions 'ofthe metal in order to provide a'means of attachment for the loading clip illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6. In the two panels l0 and M are also arcuate slots 20 and'Zlof unequal length which are provided for conventhe enclosed cartridge maga- Journaied'o'n-tl'ie stud I2 is a cylindrical drum -or body '25fhav-ing -a oentralradial rib-26 pro- "videdwithsemi-circular recesses or notches '21 forthereception of cartridges, the bottoms ofthe recesses being spaced with-reference to both the "rim o ffthedrum and the innerperiphery of the rim 'I-Infthg casing to provideclearance'for the 'cartridgerims, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The bpposite sides of the drum are provided "with roughened or scarified surfaces 28 in the form of circular bands lying in the area of the apertures 20-2l and these being near the outer cir cumference of the casing it will be seen that the operator wishing to advance the drum single packed by the manufacturer and to this end I provide a suitable loading clip illustrated in Figs. and 6. The clip, designated generally as 3|,
is a rectangular box open at its outer end and having a partial bottom 32 formed .by turning inwardly the lower end of one of the side walls 33 and curling its extremity 34 upwardly in spaced relation to the opposite wall so as to leave a transverse opening sufiicient to accommodate the passage of a single cartridge. Overlying this bottom is a sliding gate 35 which may beadjusted inwardly to close said passage. The lateral side walls of the clip are extended somewhat beyond its'bottom as indicated by 36-31 and are perforated, as shown at 38 for the purpose of snapping over the projections I8l9 on the casing. Inthisway the clip is pivotally supported above the casing in a position which enables it to be swung clear of the casing opening H, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, or into magazine loading position with its bottom opening located to feed cartridges into the opening I! and thence into the recesses of the drum. During this operation the drum is rotated by grasping it through the longer arcuate slots 2| whereby it may be moved successively distances equal to several of its rccesses 21. y
In practice huntsmen will tear ofi one end of the box or carton 39 of cartridges and insert this open end'in the loading clip 3!, first having closed the gate 35. Since the cartridge box fits closely within the clip it will be irictionally retained therein and the parts thus assembled may be held indefinitely in the dotted line position shown in Fig. 3. When it is desired to fill the magazine the clip, with the box therein, is rotated to the full line position of Fig. 4 and the gate 35 retracted to allow the cartridges to trickle into the casing opening H from which they are picked up successively as the recesses 27 in the drum pass beneath the opening.
When the box or carton is empty the loading clip is disengaged from the dispenser, until such time as it becomes necessary to replenish same, when it is again mounted on opeend end of a new box or carton and the wings 3E-3'| of the clip snapped into engagement with the projections i8--|9. I
I claim:
1. An ammunition dispenser comprising a casing having a cylindrical wall and spaced end walls, the cylindrical wall having an aperture for the introduction and-removal of cartridges. a drum fitting between the end walls and of a diameter spacing its periphery from the cylindrical wall for the accommodation of cartridges and provided with spaced divisions for receiving separate cartridges, the end walls of the casing being provided with finger openings of unequal lengths through which thedrum may be engaged for the purpose having 4 of rotating it, the longer slot serving to enable the drum to be rotated successively through a distance equal to a plurality of its spaced divisions for cartridge loading purposes and the shorter slot serving to permit the drum to be actuated single spaces to present successive cartridges in position for withdrawal.
2. In a cartridge dispenser, the combination with a casing comprising front and rear portions each having a panel and a circular. flange, one of which telescopes within the other, said flanges cut away portions at the upper side of the casing, and a post attached to one of the panels having an end extending through the other panel and carrying a securing device, of a drum journaled on the post and fitting between the casing panels having its periphery spaced from the inner flange of the casing and one of its side walls scarified, a rib on the drum provided with spaced transverse notches for receiving cartridges, one of the casing portions having an aperture afrording finger engagement with the scarified surface of the drum for'rotating it. 1
3. In an ammunition dispenser, the combination with a cylindrical casing having a transverse aperture in its upper side for the insertion and removal of cartridges and a'rotatable cartridge magazine in the casing, of a loading clip and having a bottom provided with an opening pivotaily attached to the casing at one side of said aperture in a position whereby when tilted in one direction cartridges will gravitate into the casing aperture. 7
4. In a dispenser for cartridges comprising a rotatable magazine drum and an enclosing casing having a top opening for the insertion and removal of cartridges; of a loading clip for receiving the open end of a cartridge box and having an apertured bottom and pivotal connections between the casing and clip arranged to be alternatively turned to position the clip into an inoperative position away from the casing opening or with its bottom opening in registry with said casing opening.
5. In a dispenser for cartridges comprising a rotatable magazine drum and an enclosing casing having a top opening for the insertion and removal of cartridges, and embossures on the casing at one side of said opening, of a loading clip having a partially closed bottom, a gate for closing the bottom and arms onthe clip embracing the embossures on the casing and rotatable thereon to position the opening in the bottom of the clip in register with the casing opening.
