CARTRIDGE POCKET FOR HUNTING COATS, JACKETS, 6w.
APPLIUATION TILED JULY 1 1911,

' a ocket which holds the cartri I the poo UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY M. ALTICK, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
CARTRIDGE-POCKET FOB HUNTING COATS, JACKETS,
the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,-reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a partof this specification.
- This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hunting or shooting coats, jackets, etc., and more particularly to an improved cartridge pocket. The object of the invention is to (provide ges or she ls securely and from which they may be easily removed without friction, as the demands require.
A further object is to provide a pocket in which the cartrid es or shells are Wholly inclosed and where y they are protected from the weather when carried by the wearer of the garment.
To these ends the improvementscomprise a metal casing at the lower end of the pocket having-suitable stops to arrest and support the cartridges in a wholly incased condition, and means for convenient] releasing each bottom cartrid e, as will ereinafter more fully up irr om the following description anti accompanying drawings, of which- E Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a hunting garment with my improved cartrid e or shall pocket applied, some of ets being s own'in section. Fi 2 is a section on the line bb of Fig. 1. ig. 3 is a cross-section on the line a-a of Fig. 1.
In the description and drawings, similar reference characters indicate the same parts.
Referring more particularly to said drawings, the coat, 'vest or jacket 1 may be any of the usual forms of outer hunting or shooting garments. Attached to the outer side of the same is an desirable number of cartridge or shell oc ets 2 made of suitable fabric or material, and which may include water proofing. Within ghe bottom of each pocket 2 is a metallic cylinder 3 Specification of Letters Patent.

'which is open at both ends. The bottom of the cylinder may be even with, or may project below the bottom of the pocket as is shown in the drawings. The upper or in-' closed end of said cylinder is flaring, so as to avoid obstructing the bottom cartridge or shell 5 as it passes downward throughthe pocket. The shells may be inserted in said pockets from the top, and thebottom shell rests upon two or more pro'ections 4 which extend from the inner si e ofthe cylinder at suitable distance above the extreme lower end thereof to insure the complete inclosure of the bottom shells. The
projections 4 lie in the forward part of the cylinder 3, and each cartrid e resting thereon is held out by a resilient ar or spring 6, which may be secured at the back of the cylinder or may be stamped out of the body of said cylinder, leaving its upper end united thereto. The' lower portion of the cylinder 3, in the front, is provided with a finger opening 7 to allow pressure to be exerte against the bottom cartridge. When each bottom cartridge is thus pressed in by the finger and against the retainer or spring 6, the latter yields or moves back. and allows the cartridge to clear the projections 4and drop through the bottom of the cylinder into the hand. As each bottom cartridge is thus released, the spring 6 instantl movescout and forms a guide to direct t e next cartridge into the supports 4. The pressure necessary to release each bottom cartrid e is convenientl applied by the thumb, t e other fingers being conveniently below the cylinder to catch the released shell or cartridge.
A shell pocket thus constructed ail'ords a ready delivery of each shell through the use of one hand only. This is a convenience that is appreciated by huntsmen and trapshooters, who are not re uired under any conditions to release the old of the other hand on the fowling piece or gun. The shell is also delivered with the head thereof downward and in the palm of the hand, and is therefore in a position to be conveniently placed in the gun without handling the same.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. In a'shooting garment, the co1nbination with an elon ated pocket secured to the garment and a apted to receive a load of shells or cartridges, of a metal cylinder secured to the lower end of said pocket and,
1C pocket construct'e forming the bottom portion of said pocket, devices in said cylinder for supporting the lowermost cartridges within said cylinder, and an aperture in the wall of said cylinder 5 whereby pressure may be applied to the cartridge Within said cylinder to release it from the 5 id supporting devices, substantially as spscified. 1
2. In a shootin gar'f'nent a cartridge of suitable fabric, a metal cylinder secured at the lower end of said pocket and forming a continuation of said pocket, said cylinder having a spring in the Wall thereof and acting as'a guide and retainer for the shells, and stops in the wall thereof, said spring and stops being adapted to support the lowermost cartridge within said cylinder, and an opening in the lower front portion of said cylinder where by pressure may be exerted on said lowermost cartridge to release it, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
