1 Claim.
The present invention relates to improvements in mechanical toy guns.
The primary object of the-invention is to provide a toy gun which is economical in construction, simple in operation and resembles a repeating machine gun in appearance and shape.
Another object of the invention is to provide a toy mechanical gun in which the projectiles are fed from a magazine disposed above the barrel so as to be successively brought into position in front of a reciprocating spring-loaded plunger so as to project the projectiles one after the other.
Another object of the invention is to provide a toy automatic gun having an operator which can be manually rotated so as to successively retract the plunger against the action of the coil spring in quick succession.
Another object of the invention is to provide a mechanical toy gun of the above-mentioned character which is uniquely constructed with the various parts arranged to facilitate mass production and enhance the commercial success of the device.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent during the course of the following description of the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational View of the mechanical toy gun embodying the invention illustrating portions thereof broken away to show various details of construction;
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the mechanical gun further showing the arrangement of the various parts thereof;
Figure 3 is a vertical cross sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows and illustrating the rotary operator for retracting the plunger against the tension of the spring; and
Figure 4 is a vertical cross sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows and illustrating various details of the magazine construction.
In the drawing, the reference character 5 will generally be employed to indicate a gun barrel of tubuar construction formed of wood or the like and embodying a barrel section 6 having a longitudinal bore I extending from the muzzle end to the intermediate portion of said barrel. The bore 'I is enlarged as at 8 (Figure 1) to provide a recess or chamber for receiving a coil spring which will hereinafter be more fully described. Mounted in the rear end of the barrel 5 is a bushing 9 having a bore I0 axially aligned with the bore 1 and said bushing is fastened in place by means of a nail or the like as at II.
Reciprocably mounted within the rear portion of the bore 1 and guided by the bore ID of the sleeve 9 is a plunger l2 around which is encircled a coil spring I3 with one of its ends engaging the sleeve 9 and its opposite end engaging a transverse pin I4 received in a suitable opening I5 in the reciprocating plunger I2. One end of the transverse pin I 4 is slightly longer than the opposite end and projects radially into a longitudinal kerf slot I6 for being engaged by the rotary operator.
A radially extending elongated slot I 1 is formed in the barrel section 6 at the rear end thereof and disposed within said slot is a channel shaped magazine for receiving a series of wooden projectiles or the like as at I9. The magazine I8 includes a rear wall 20 having side walls 2l terminating in inwardly directed opposed flanged portions 22 and 23 for engaging the rear and front portions of the projectile. It is noted that the magazine I8 is disposed slightly rearwardly of the inner end of the plunger I2 when the plunger is projected so that the same will engage the rear end of the projectile during its forward movement and project the same through the bore 'I of the barrel 5. Flanges 20a and 22a are formed in the rear wall 20 as well as the inwardly directed ilanges 22 and 23 for receiving nails or the like as at 20h and 22h so as to rigidly secure the magazine in place on the barrel 5. The side walls 2| are extended to project into the longitudinal slot I I a slight distance to further support the magazine and prevent displacement thereof.
The rotary operator comprises a yoke member or handle structure 24 having a handle portion 25 and parallel bifurcated arm portions 26. 'Ihe barrel section 6 is attened as at 28 at diametrically opposite sides thereof for receiving the bifurcated arms 26 and a nail or the like as at 29 is passed through one of the bifurcated arms 26 for anchoring the yoke member 24 in position.
Formed in the free ends of the bifurcated arms 26 is a pair of axially disposed and aligned bearing openings 30 for receiving the rotary shaft 3I. One end of the rotary shaft 3| projects slightly beyond one of said bifurcated arms and is transversely bored for receiving a crank arm 33 having a crank handle 34. The intermediate portion of the rotary shaft 3l is provided with radially extending bores 35 for receiving crossed pins 36 which are adapted to have their free ends successively brought into registry with the kerf slot and into engagement with the transversely extending pin I4.
Formed in the rear portion of the barrel E is a longitudinal slot 38 which terminates at the rear end of the barrel and extends from a point slightly rearward of the yoke member 24 and said slot is of suicient width for receiving a gun stock 39 which is cut away as at 40 to conform to the shape of the shoulder. The gun stock may be fastened in the slot 38 by nails or the like or other fastening means.
In operation, the stock 39 is placed against the shoulder and the handle 25 grasped by the left hand so that the right hand will be free to manipulate the hand crank 34 which is rotated torcau'se the radially projecting pins, 36toengage -the transversely extending pins I4 on the reciprocating plunger i2 and thereby retract the plunger against the action of the coil spring I3. When the plunger I2 has reached the limit of'fsmearward movement, a projectile I9 will fall by gravity into the gun barrel bore I in the'path -of -said plunger.
