The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in sharpening devices for hand operated glass cutting tools and more particularly to a holder for the cutter to support the same in a proper position to sharpen the bevel edge of the rotating cutting wheel as the same is dragged over a sharpening stone,
More specifically, the invention embodies a holder of this character whereby the rotating cutting wheel is held in a position to cause both a rotating and sliding action of the wheel when dragged across the surface of a sharpening stone so that different portions of the bevel edge of the wheel are brought into sharpening position during the sharpening action to uniformly sharpen the cutter.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is efficient and reliable in use, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view.
Figure 2 is a front elevational view.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary front elevational view showing the holder for the cutter.
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional View taken substantially on the line 4--4 of Figure 2, and
Figure 5 is a group perspective view of the cutter holder.
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates the base member of the holder for the Sharpener and which has the form of a relatively thin elongated sheet of metal adapted to be moved endwise over a sharpening stone and having a portion of one edge bent back upon itself as indicated at 6 and with the free edge of the bent portion bent upwardly to form a hand grip 1.
The remaining portion of the said edge of the base member 5 is also bent to provide an elongated backing plate 8 inclined longitudinally along said edge toward the longitudinal center and one end of the member, and which is also inclined laterally, upwardly and inwardly, over the member at an acute angle thereto.
To the outer surface of the backing plate 8 is secured a bracket 9 by means of screws or the like l0, the intermediate portion of the bracket being offset outwardly as indicated at Il to space the same from the backing plate 8.
An inverted U-shaped clamping member I2 is positioned with its leg portions I3 straddling the oiset portion of the bracket II and a set screw I4 is inserted through aligned openings I5 and I6 in the outermost leg of the clamping member I2 and in the oiset portion II of the bracket 9 and also threaded through a nut I1 positioned between the offset portion I l of the bracket and the innermost leg of the clamping member I2 so that the inner end of the set screw will bear against the innermost leg of the clamping member to force the same into clamping engagement With the backing,- plate B in a manner as will be apparent from an inspection of Figure 4 of the drawings.
A coil spring 14a is positioned on the set screw $4 between the outer leg of the clamping member I2 and the bracket 9 to move the clamping member away from the backing plate 8 when the set screw is backed out.
The nut I'I is of a square-shaped construction to prevent turning of the nut in the bracket 9 while threading the screw I4 therein. n
Accordingly, the lower portion of a conventional form of glass cutter I8 may be clamped between the backing plate 8 and the clamping member I2 so that the rotating cutting wheel I9 journaled at the lower end of the cutter will be supported in a vertically inclined position as well as at an angle with respect to the longitudinal center line of the base 5 and with the lower edge of the cutting wheel projecting slightly below the base for contact with the upper surface of a sharpening stone 20.
In the operation of the device the handle 1 is grasped in the hand of a person and the base 5 dragged in one direction along the surface -of the sharpening stone. During this dragging action the beveled cutting edge of the wheel I9 will slide along the sharpening stone and at the same time will rotate to bring all portions of the bevel cutting edge of the wheel into sharpening engagement with the stone.
The bevel edge of the wheel will be supported in a position so that the lowermost edge of the wheel will lie in the plane of the upper surface of the stone.
After one edge of the wheel I9 has been sharpened the cutter I8 is removed and turned to bring the other bevel edge of the sharpening wheel into sharpening position.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by` the spiritof the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claim. Y
What is claimed is:
In a device of the class described, a base embodying an elongated flat member adapted to be manipulated endWise over the face =of asharpen'- ing stone, a backing plate onone-side edge of said member upstanding therefrom and inclining longitudinally of the member and crosswise over the same at an acute angle thereto, and a clamp -mounted on said plate and operative to bind a glass cutting tool-against said -plate in upstanding position and at the same angle to said member as that of the plate Awith the cutter Wheel of the tool in a plane parallel to that of the plate and engaging the sharpening stone, whereby When said member is moved endwise said wheel will be moved sidevvise over said stone in an oblique position relative to the line of movement and will thereby be caused to rotate during such movement, and a handle on said member for moving the same.
