This invention relates to window locks, and aims to provide a simple, inexpensive, and easily applied and operated safety Window lock whereby when the window is closed the sashes will be securely held and locked in their closed positions. This therefore not only serves the purpose of a safety window lock against unauthorized opening of the window, but also provides a tight closure to more effectively keep out the cold in the winter and the heat in the summer.
The above and other objects will become apparent in the following description, wherein characters of reference refer to like-numbered parts in the accompanying drawings. Referring to the drawings, it is to be noted that they are intended for the purpose of illustration only, and that it is neither intended nor desired to limit the invention necessarily to the specific details of construction shown excepting insofar as they may be deemed essential to the invention.
Referring briefly to the drawings,
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a window illustrating the application of the safety lock thereto.
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing a modified form of the device.
Fig. 4 is a. plan view of Fig. 3.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numerals I and II indicated the upper and lower window sashes, respectively. The bottom frame member of the sash II) is shown at I2, and the top frame member of the sash I I at I3.
An elongated flat plate or dog I4 has a circular opening I5 through one end thereof whereby it is pivotally secured through the medium of a screw I6 to the frame member I2 of the upper sash, and it is of sufficient length to extend nearly to the edge of the lower sash frame member I3, as shown. Intermediate the length of the dog I4, an upright pin or post I! extends rigidly therefrom, and is provided with a groove or cutout I8 on that side thereof facing toward the screw opening I5. At the free extremity of the dog M, a second opening I9 may be provided therethrough for the purpose presently to be defined.
In association with the dog I 4, an L-shaped member 20 having arms 2| and 22, is used. The arm 2| has an opening 23 therethrough of substantially the same diameter as the post I1, and is adapted to be positioned by slipping the opening 23 over the post l1 and then drawing it backward so that the forward wall of its openin 23 will register within the groove I8. A threaded opening 24 is provided through the arm 22 for a set screw 25 having an enlarged base 26 adapted to contact the side of the frame member I3. It is apparent that, upon tightening of the set screw, the dog I4 will be held firmly against both frame members I2 and I3 to keep them at the same level and to prevent opening of the window. When the window is open, or when the lock is not in use, the member 2!] is of course removed, and the dog I4 is swung into the position shown in Fig. 4 in broken lines.
Should the member 20 be unavailable in an emergency, the window can be less securely locked by merely driving a nail 21 through the opening I9 into the frame member I3.
Obviously, modifications in form and structure may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim:
In combination with the lower frame member of the upper window sash of a window and the upper frame member of the lower sash of the same, a releasable locking means comprising a dog pivotally secured at one end to the upper surface of said lower frame member and of sufficient length to extend part way across the upper surface of said upper frame member, said dog having a post extending rigidly upward therefrom intermediate its length, an L-shaped member comprising a pair of arms at substantially right angles to each other, one of said arms having a threaded opening therein and having a set screw in said threaded opening, the other of said arms having an opening through its end registrable over said post, said first arm extending downward from said second arm, said set screw being screwed against the vertical wall of said upper frame member to tighten said second arm against said post thereby releasably locking said dog against the upper surfaces of said frame members, said post having a groove cut out of that face thereof facing said upper sash intermediate the height of the post thereby providing said groove with a rear Wall, a ceiling and a floor, that portion of the wall surrounding said opening through said second arm being registrable in said groove against said rear wall, said ceiling and floor preventing vertical up or down movement of said second arm.
