u SWEAT BAND FOR` HATS Filed Jan. 26, 1946 Patented Dec. 9, 1947 UN ITED STATES ATENT OFFICE SWEATBAN D FOR HATS .John .(3. Kerr, Allegan, Mich.
Application l'anuaryfZG, 1946, SeralNo. 643,675
6 Claims. l
My invention relates to an improvement in inside hatbands and has for one purpose an inside band adaptable for use with sun helmets and the like.
Another purpose is to provide a band or internal head engaging support which is adjustable in size and shape.
Another purpose is to provide ysuch anl element or band which may be readily removed for re- `placen'ient 'or cleaning.
Another `purpose is to provide a -spacedhead engaging band for sun helmets and the like, which leaves a free space between the head of the user and the hat or sun helmet for ventilation and cooling.
Other purposes will appear from time to time in the course of the specication and claims.
I illustrate the invention more or less diagrammatically in the accompanying drawings where- 1n:
Figure 1 is a side elevation with parts tion and parts in skeleton outline;
Figure 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the band itself, and its securing elements; and
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the end of the band.
Like parts are indicated by like symbols throughout the specification and drawings.
Referring to the drawings, l generally indicates the body of a sun helmet. Riveted or otherwise secured to one side of the crown of the helmet I is a securing piece 2 having an upper portion or flange 3 provided with holes 4 through which pass rivets or other securing means 5. The member 2 is shown as having two socket elements 6 the details of which do not of themselves form part of the present invention, but which are yieldingly adapted to receive any suitable projections or headed studs l of which two are shown at the end of each of the two band sections in sec- 8. In Figure 4 one of the bands 8 is shown as secured to the member 2, while the other is shown in the release position, to illustrate the general formation of the headed stud On the opposite side of the hat or helmet body l is a second support lll, having an upper portion Il provided with apertures IZ to receive any suitable rivets or securing members 3. The portion I!! is provided with a plurality of sets of sockets Id shown as arranged in two groups of four. Each set of sockets may be identical with the sockets S and Alll 2 is adapted to receive headed stud members l5 which Vmay be identical with the members 1. It will 'be noted that two suchl members are shown at Vthe dotted vline Afree end band portion of Figure-4..
In -the use of the device it will be clear that the band sections 8 may both be quickly and completely removed from the hat or helmet, whereas the members y2 and Il! are preferably permanently secu'r'ec'i to the hat or helmet. The multiple grouping of the sockets 14, in connection with the pairs of studs l5 on the opposite ends of the bands 8 permits ready adjustment of the effective circumference of the bands taken as a whole. The employment of the two studs I5 on the ends of the members 8 maintains the bands or members 8 in a common plane, in proper position to engage the head of the wearer.
It will be realized that whereas I have described and illustrated a practical and operative device, nevertheless many changes may be made in the size, shape, number and disposition of parts Without departing from the spirit of my invention. I therefore wish my description and drawings to be taken as in a broad sense illustrative or diagrammatic, rather than as limiting me to my precise showing.
For example the two band sections 8 may be formed as a single member secured to the support 2.
It will be understood that my invention may be applied in both replaceable and non replaceable bands. In a non replaceable band a one piece sweat band could be used but in general I iind it desirable to provide a two piece band as shown in the drawings. It will be noted that swiveling of the band sections S is prevented by the employment of multiple fasteners at the ends of the sections.
It will be understood that the adjustment herein provided is effective not only as to size but as to head shape. It will be understood that the sweat band may be employed which is permanently secured to one side of the hat, bui; with free ends which permit adjustment for size and shape of head. It will also be understood that where I illustrate two supports, more than two supports or connecting means may be employed.
I claim:
1. A head engaging band assembly for headgear, including a pair of supports adapted to be secured to said headgear at opposite sides thereof, and a head engaging band element removably secured to said supports, said band element including a. pair of separate band portions individually removable from said supports, and longitudinally adjustable on said supports.
2. A head engaging band assembly for headgear, including a pair of supports adapted to be secured to said headgear at opposite sides thereof, and a head engaging band element removably secured to said supports, said band element including a pair of separate band portions individually removable from said supports, each said portion having an end opposed to and adjustably secured to one of said supports.
3. A head engaging band assembly for headgear, including a pair of supports adapted to be secured to said headgear at opposite sides thereof, and a head engaging band element removably secured to said supports, said band element including a pair of separate band portions individually removable from said supports, each end of each said portion, and the opposed support; having snap connecting elements.
4. In combination, a headgear body and a head engaging band structure therewithin, said structure including a pair of supports secured to the headgear body at opposite areas of said body, said band structure being freely removable from said supports, and having ends adapted to be adjustably secured to said supports at a plurality of positions.
5. In combination, a headgear body and a head engaging band structure therewithin, said structure including a pair of supports secured to the headgear body at opposite areas of said body, said band structure including two separate band portions, each said band portion having at each end snap button connections adapted to interpenetrate with opposed connections on said supports, there being a plurality of said snap button connections. for each said band section, on at least one of said supports, whereby the total circumference of the band formed by said band portions may be adlusted.
6. In combination, a headgear body and a flexible head engaging band positioned therewithin, said band being adjustable as to circumferential length, whereby to conform to heads of different size, and means for supporting it in inwardly spaced relation to the head gear body, whereby said band may conform to various shapes of head, said band having opposed adjacent ends and means for adjustably securing said opposed ends to said body.
