4 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in hoists and more particularly to an electrically operated hoist adapted for use as a hoist for anchor chain or cable on small boats, and the invention has for its primary object to provide a hoisting drum in which the electric motor is enclosed and sealed against the entrance of water.
A further object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of this character of simple and practical construction, which is efficient and reliable in operation, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
` Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which- Figure l is an end elevational view partly broken away and shown in section to illustrate the gear drive means for the hoist.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, and
Figure 3 is an end elevational View of the bearing for one end of the drum.
Figure 4 is an end elevational view of the opposite end of the drum and with parts broken away to show the brake.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the locking dog for the drum and Figure 6 is a similar view of the brake operating cam.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numerals 5 and `6 designate a pair of stationary end plates connected to each other in spaced parallel relation by tie rods 'l and having flanges 8 at one edge for attaching to the deck of a boat or other suitable supporting structure by means of bolts 9 or the like.
A stub shaft ID is attached to the end plate 6 and projects inwardly thereof and on which one end of a drum II is journaled by means of a hub I2.
An annular bearing I3 is secured to the inside of the end plate 5 by means of bolts or the like I4, the bearing having a reduced inner end I5 forming a shoulder I6, the adjacent end of the drum II being journaled on the reduced end I5 of the bearing and abutting the shoulder I6 to prevent end play.
To the inner end of the bearing I3 is vsecured an end plate I'I to which an electric motor I8 2 is attached by means of bolts or the like I9, the motor being positioned at the center of the drum II.
A conduit 2U for an electric cable 2I attached to the motor extends through the end plate 5 and end plate Il to a suitable source of current and the shaft 22 of the motor is journaled in the end plates 5 and I'I. The outer end of the shaft 22 is squared as indicated at 23 for the hand operation of the drum, when desired.
The ends of the, drum II are formed with flanges 24 and 25, the flange 24 having an internal ring gear 26 welded or otherwise secured thereto which is driven by a pinion 21 secured to the shaft 22 through the medium of an idler v gear 28 journaled on a shaft 29 carried by the end plate 5 and having its inner end threaded for connection with the bearing I3, the bearing having one edge cut away as indicated at 30 to accommodate the idler gear.
The outer ends of the drum II are closed by cover plates 3l, having their edges connected to sealing rings 32 positioned within the respective flanges of the drum to thus prevent the entrance of water into the drum to injure the motor or interfere with the operation thereof.
A safety locking pawl 33 is freely pivoted on one of the tie rods 'I and adapted to engage teeth 34 formed on the outer periphery of the flange 24 to lock the drum against cable unwinding movement. The drum may be rotated in its cable winding operation without interference by the pawl which rides freely over the teeth and the pawl may be manually swung free of the teeth into the position shown by the dotted lines in Figure 1 to permit unwinding movement of the drum,
f when desired.
The inside of the flange 25 forms a brake drum with which a pair of brake shoes 35 engage, the shoes being pivoted at one end to the end plate 6 and free at their other ends and between which a brake operating cam 36 is positioned for moving the shoes into brake applying position. The cam 36 is carried atone end of a shaft 31 joinable in the end plate 6 and to the outer end of which is secured a handle 38 for operating the cam to apply or release the brake. A coil spring 39 connects the brake shoes adjacent their free ends t0 release the brake.
A switch 40 of conventional construction is attached to the outside of the end plate 6 for controlling operation of the motor I8 through the cable 2I which is carried outside of the hoist in a conduit 4I.
In view of the foregoing description taken in 3 conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what I claim 1. A hoist of the class described comprising a drum, a support for the drum including end plates, a hub at one end ofY the drum journaled on one of the end plates, a bearing secured to the inner side of the other of said end plates and rotatably supporting the other end of the drum, a ring gear on said last-named end of the drum surrounding the bearing, an electric motor `secured t the bearing inwardly of the drum, and gears operatively connecting the motor to the ring gear.
2. A hoist of the class described comprising a drum, a support for the drum including end plates, a hub at one end of the drum journaled on one of the end plates, a bearing securedto the inner side of the other of said end plates and rotatably supporting the other end of the drum, a ring gear on said last-named end of the drum surrounding the bearing, an end plate attached to the inner edge of the bearing, an electr-ic'rnotor attached to the last-named end plate and having ashaft journaled therein, and gears operativelyl connecting the motor to the ring gear.
3. A hoist of the class described comprising a drum, a support for the drum including end plates, a hub at one end of the drum journaled on one of the end plates, a bearing secured to the inner end of the other of said end plates and rotatably supporting the other end of the drum, said drum including flanges on each end, a sealing ring at the outer edge of each flange, a cover plate for each end of the drum connected to the sealing rings, an internal ring gear on one of the anges inwardly of an adjacent cover plate and surrounding the bearing, an electric motor secured to the bearing and including a shaft, and gears operatively connecting the motor to the ring gear.
4. A hoist of the class described comprising a drum, an electric motor enclosed in the drum and including a shaft journaled in one end of the drum, said drum including flanges at each end, a ring gear carried by one of the anges, gears operatively connecting the shaft to the ring gear, teeth on one of the said flanges, a ratcheting dog engaging the teeth to lock the drum against un- Winding,A movement, said other ange constituting a brake drum, brake shoes arranged in the brake drum, and a lever operatively connected to the shoes for applying the brake.
