Description

v vopen at the rear side to per NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
ARCHIBALD Fonn,..or Nnwronr, KENTUCKY.'
iMPnovem-:NT IN .MACHINERY Fon oPENiNeoLo no es.
'specification raming part 'p'f Let-ters Patent No. emana; vdanni June 7, 1ste.
'o. alZ whom it ma!) oowernn. f
Be it known that I, AROHIBALD FORD, of
Newport', Campbell county,
invented new and useful-.Improvementsin Rope-Opening Machines; and I do declarethevfollovc'ingto.be a full and'v exact descriptionthereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, niakingpart of this specification.
' The said improvement consists in-'an ar-I rangement for, the preliminary opening of the Figure 1j is a perspective view'ofa machine embodying' my improvements@ Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section at mr, Figui.' v. The frame A has journaled within it .horizonta-lly a drum, B. The peripheryf'of this'l drum at distances somewhat exceeding the 'length of the staple is armed-with'longitudi- .nal ribs -or bars C slightly hollowing or depressed c von' their vadvancing side, so as to present in the direction of rotation a blunt l' salient edge, e. Each bar issuliicientlyper-` forated at c to prevent the creation of such a current of air as otherwise from the very swift rotation of the drum sixhundred to one thonsand per minute Wouldjte'nd to drive thestuil' K is an elevated par, having cavities tk nl its' upper edge for the purpose of holding the butts of the rope to the action oi' the beater, as
will be hereinafter explained.
k' It' are corresponding apertures inthe cas*- ing forming Vparte which admit of the ready insertion and withdrawal of the ends of therope.
Kentucky, have.
'consequenceof Operation: The beater being set in motion, the buttsl of the ropes are'iirst inserted for an instant in the cavities ofthe bar K and there held so as to open out the strands and iibers at one end before the other end is fedinto the machine. The ropes being then reversed are .i
passed into the machine ,between the feedrollers G H.' 'The violent striking ofthe rope by 'the blunt or rounded edges of the beaters 4acts to unwind the component strands and fibers while the fiat depressed'I portion c,.in I
conjunction with the air-suction through the apertures c, acts to create a la` that further'spreads and"separates the bers. The small teeth D assist in ejecting the smaller fibers. The' butt ,or last end having passed throughthe feed-rollersseparatesof itself in' the previ-ous opening o f it, as
already stated.
Iu-theuseof 'this class of machines aserions diiilculty occurs vfrom the final end of each .piece of rope passing through unopened: The
portsor apertures kk admit of the easy in-g sertionand withdrawal of the butts, andthe rearend ofthe rope being rstopened and .its forward endinsesfnd between the feed--roll-v ers, the whole will pass'throngh, themachine without further manipulation, the feed-rollers operating to govern the entrance of rope andI hold it to the action of the beater until 'the "whole has passed within the machine, so that beforethe feed-rollers cease to hold the ends part ofthe rope remains unof 'the'bers no opened. Iam aware that machines existfor opening rope consisting of rotary beaters armed with l spikes andbars, and d o notftherefore desire to be understood as claiming other than the specific arrangement vand combination here. shcwn,'wherehy such machinesare made to operate with-'more i'ulle'ect. I 1
I- claiinas new and of my invention and desire tosecure-by Letters Patent-- l The elevated .bar K,provided with cavities It k,`arranged in the Adescribed relation to the,
feed mechanism and drum, and operating in combination with the Vlatter to open the butts of' the rope, 'as set forth.
In'. testimony of which invention I .hereunto set my hand. 1
I ARCHIBALD FORD.
