Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
A. L. FULLER, OF CLINTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
COVERING THREAD WITH WOOL.
Specification of Letters .Patent No.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW L. FULLER, of Clinton, in the county of Worcester and State of Massacliusetts, have invented a new and useful Improved Sliver; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the drawings herewith presented and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The object of my invention is to enable me to make a sliver offthe refuse waste, or short fiber stock, and to at the same time give it strength enough to be used in the loom.
I am aware that slivers have been made of two materials both carded together', also by placing one between the other after leaving the card, and also by spinning the two together to form a thread of two substances or dierent qualities of the same. y
My invention di'ers from all these, and consists in placing a core in the interior or center of the sliver by introducing it into the carded material as it is delivered bythe comb, and by the combined action ofthe comb and condenser from the sliver around the core. To accomplish this, I attach to the frame of the card (see drawings in which A represents the last roll, B the comb, C the condenser and D D the rolls) a stud or spindle F to hold a bobbn or ball of the 16,164, dated December 2, 1856.
thread to make the core and pass the end of it (the thread) into the condenser C with the lber as delivered by the comb B the motion of which curles the fibers around the core and the rolls draw the whole through as condensed and perfect although the twist given is thrown out again and the core will be found in the center or nearly so.
Thus I am enabled to make a sliver capable of being used in the loom and drawn through by the shut-tle somewhat after the manner of weaving hair, and make all kinds of quilted, waddedor padded goods for various purposes, though I do not claim the weaving of such goods, nor the use of wad-` ding in the loom, neither do I claim makingA the sliver of two materials 1n order to spin Y a liner around a coarser, or vice versa, as I am aware that is old. But
Vhat I do claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
I claim the above described mode of placing the core in the sliver and covering itv by the combined action of the comb B, and condenser C, so as to produce the sliver above described, and this I claim whether a twist be given to the sliver or not.
A. L. FULLER.
