Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES BOEOKH, OF TORONTO, CANADA.
IMPROVEMENT lN BROOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,694, dated March 11, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES BoEcKH, of Toronto, Canada, have invented a new and -useful Improvement in Brooms; and l do ed in bunches of suitable size, then passed through tapering holes in the back of the brush, said holes being widest at their outer or upper ends. Each bunch of strips or bristles, after having been passed through one of the tapering holes, is twisted so as to spread its butt endsvfor the `admission of a tapering plug, which, when ,driven in, firmly retains the bunch. After the bunches having been thus secured in the l,back the plugs and the butt ends oi' the bunches are cut ott flush with the surface of the back, and a protecting plate is put on to prevent the tapering plugs from Working loose.
In the drawing, the letterA designates the back of my brush, which is made of wood or any other suitable material, and provided With a series of tapering holes, a., to receive the bunches B ot' rattan, willow, metal wire, or any other suitable materia-l.' These bunches are of such asize that the same when compressed can be made to pass up through the vday of July, 1872.
narrow ends of the holes a, and after having been thus inserted in said holes they are twisted, whereby their upper or butt ends are spread, as indicated in Fig. l of the drawing. By these means room is obtained for the in` troduction of a conical plug, O, between the butt ends of each bunch, and by driving down those plugs the bunches are irmly wedged in the holes a. Said plugs are, by preference, made of hard wood, so that by driizi'ng them home the strips composing the bunches will be partly embedded in the sides of the holes a. After all the bunches have been secured in 'the back, as above stated, their butt* ends, to-
gether with the plugs, are cut olf ush with the outer surface of the back, and fthen the protecting-plate D is put on, whereby the plugs are eifectually prevented from becoming displaced or from workin g loose.
By these means a strong and durable brush can be made with comparatively little labor.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is Y The combination of bunches B of rattan or other suitable material with the baclg A, tapering plugs O, and a protecting-plate D, said back being provided with tapering holes a., through the narrow ends OfWhich the butt ends ofthe bunches are pressed, then twisted to admit the tapering plugs, while said plugs,
lafter being driven home, areretained by the protecting-plate, substantially asijset forth.
This specitication signed by me this 29th CHAs. BEGKH.
