Description

'PADG ETT Oct. 14, 1947. E. D.
CHILDS SLEEPING GARMENT Filed Jan. 1e, 1947 amm/ms,
-25 .30 Mmm, .3. Mw/imm Patented Oct. 14, 1947 UNITED 4STATES A'rENT OFFICE The invention relates to new and useful improvements in a childs sleeping garment.
An object of the invention is to provide a sleeping garment having a body portion and a limb portion wherein the front and rear sections 'of the limbportion of the garment are separated from each other by an inserted gusset which extends across the bottom and along each side of the limb portion, thereby giving complete freedom of movement to the limbs and feet of the child.
A further object of the invention is to provide a sleeping garment of the above type wherein the front section of the limb portion is detachably connected to the gusset across the bottom and along eaoh side so that said front section may be folded back to the waistline Without disturbing the position of the rear section of the garment.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front view of a sleeping garment embodying the improvements with a portion of the front section unfastened and the neck portion unfastened;
Figure 2 is a, perspective View showing the inserted gusset strip which separates the front section of the limb portion of the garment from the rear section thereof; and
Figure 3 is a View showing more or less diagrammatcally and on a smaller scale the manner of attaching the gusset to the front and rear sections at the bottom of the garment.
The improved childs sleeping garment includes fabric sections which are shaped and joined by stitching to provide a body portion conforming generally to the body of the child and a limb portion which is broader and longer and so shaped as to provide freedom oi movement for the limbs and feet of the child.
In the drawings, which show by way of illustration one embodiment of the invention, the body portion is indicated at l0. At the upper part of the body portion are sleeves II, II which are preferably formed from the same piece of fabric as the body. After the fabric pieces have been cut to proper shape, the pieces are united by stitches along the sides I2, I2 of the body portion and along the under sides I3, I3 of the sleeves. The fabric pieces are joined along the upper sides lil, I4 oi the sleeves which at the right side of the garment, as viewed in Figure 1, extend across the shoulder to the neck opening I5. At the other side there is a shoulder opening from the sleeve to the neck opening. The neck opening is provided with a suitable binding strip and at the rear side of the shoulder opening is the reinforcing strip I6 provided with suitable 2 fasteners Il. At the front side of the shoulder opening is a similar reinforcing strip I8 carrying cooperating fasteners, one of which is indicated at i9. This provides a means whereby the shoulder opening may be closed.
As noted above, the limb portion is preferably made from the same pieces of fabric as are utilized in the forming of the body portion of the garment. This limb portion is indicated in the drawings at 20. The limb portion extends laterally of the body portion, as indicated at 2l, 2l, and thence downwardly to the bottom of the garment. Stitched to the rear section 22 of the limb portion is a gusset strip 23. Said gusset strip extends upthe sides of the limb portion separating the sections, as indicated at 24, and thence inwardly, as indicated at 25, to the body of the garment This strip is of substantially uniform width across the bottom and up the sides and is tapered from the side to .the body portion. The section 25 of the gusset strip is secured by stitches 26 to the back section of the garment and is secured by stitches 2l to the front section of the garment. This gusset strip is stitched to the back section along the sides and across the bottom by stitches indicated at 28. Stitched to the gusset strip across the bottom and along each side thereof is a fastener carrying strip 29. Said fastener strip is secured to the gusset by stitching indicated at 3i). This strip is mitred at the corners and is secured to the section 25 of the gusset by lines of stitching indicated at 3|, Attached to this strip 29 is a reinforcing tape 32 carrying suitable fasteners 33. The front section of the limb portion 34 is provided With a fastener carrying strip 35 to which is secured a tape 36 carrying fasteners 31. These fasteners 31 cooperate with the fasteners 33 in the closing of the garment.
It is noted that the front section is detachably connected to the gusset strip across the bottom and up the sides to substantially the waistline or body portion of the garment and therefore this front section may be detached and foldedy back to the waistline without disturbing in any way the rear section and the gusset strip which is secured thereto. This enables attention to be given to the child without disturbing the bottom of the garment on which the child is lying. Furthermore, by this inserted gusset, the front section is separated from the rear section of the garment, thus giving the child complete freedom of movement of his limbs and feet, permitting the child to kick and turn at will and yet remaining covered and warm.
Attached to the garment, preferably at the upper part of the limb portion, are tapes 38 and 39 which may be used to fasten the garment to the crib. It will be noted that the child may be placed in the sleeping garment so that it may sleep on its side, stomach or back. Furthermore, when the garment is constructed as described above, there are no fastening strips, buttons or snaps to contact with the body of the child. With the inserted gusset extending across the bottom, the child may also stand up in bed, in the event, of course, that the tapes 38 and 39 have been released from their connection to the openings may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in thev appended claims.
I claim:
