UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MASON B. FRANKLIN, on PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
PICTURE-MOLDING HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,913, dated June 14, 1881.
" Application filed October 4, lSO. (N model.)
To all whom it may concern:
. tore-molding hooks'in which a fender or fulcrum is arranged'tooperate in connection with the suspended hook from its upper bearing; and the object of my present invention is to construct a strong and durable molding-hook that may be adjusted to any desired place or center upon a molding to which it is suspended without injuring or defacing the moldin g and lessening the liability of said molding being drawn from its fastening by the Weight of the suspended articles, as hereinafterdescribed.
In making my improved molding-hooks they may be so formed as to correspond with the shape or style of molding on which they are used or applied, and they may be finished in similar effect tocorrespond with the finish of the molding itself, so that whenin use the book will hardly be perceptible.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one form of myimp'roved molding-hook in connection with a molding, which I now will proceed to describe, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved hook as suspended on a molding. Fig.
2 is a perspective View of the same, and Fig.
3 represents a blank as out before it is formed into shape.
In Figs. land 2 O G represent my improved hook, G the upper hook and G the lower .hook. The upper hook, 0, being of the proper the upper hook, 0, audit is provided with rearward-extended ears or flanges F, to be used asfa fender or fulcrum or for holding a feud erblock, E, which fender serves. as a hearing against the wall below the molding, and, in connection with the upper hooks hearing at D, the intermediate or body part of the hook is held in position insulated from the surface of the molding, thus guarding against inj uring or defacing said molding when in use or when adjusting said hook at any desired center. The only points of bearing of hook O G being at D and E, the strain from any suspended article is brought in a vertical line with the upper bearing, D, which lessens the liability of the molding being detached from its fastening, and making it capable of sustaining a greater weight.
In Fig. 2 K, L, and M represent the sides of the divisions or reductions of the hook G, cut at angles and in parallel planes to corre spond or conform with the molding B represeuted in the drawings, by which crossing the contour-lines of the molding vertically no oblique lines or shadows are thrown across the members of said molding, and the divisions when finished to correspond with the molding, give the hook the appearance of part of the molding itself when applied in use.
As hook G is formed somewhat narrower than book 0 it is strengthened by curving or crimping its surface at right angles with the bend of the hook; but in manufacturing these books their surface-may be curved or crimped the entire length to the bearing-point D, which enables me to produce a strong and durable hook from a-much lighter stock and at nearly one-half the cost than otherwise would be in the use of heavier stock.
Having thus described my invention and its use, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s
1. The picture-molding hook C G, provided with rearward-extended ears or fenders F, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
2. The picture-molding hook C G, with its sides K, L, and M, or divisions of reductions, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
