MAGIC LANTERN.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 242,823, dated June 14, 1881. Application filed February 28, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED A. HART, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Magic Lanterns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specificatlon.
This invention has for its object to furnish a magic lantern which may be folded up in compact form when not in use, and when in use is unfolded and formed into a substantial casing containing all the requisite compartments. It is designed more particularly for parlor use, where the lanterns of ordinary construction would be in the way.
It consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of the lantern partially unfolded. Fig. 2 is the device unfolded and formed into a complete lantern. Fig. 3 is ahorizontal section of the lantern on lines w m, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a vertical section on line y y, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section of the folded 1antern,and Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the lantern as folded when not in use.
a is the main casing or box, in which is mounted the objective-tube a. This casing is formed with a suitable objective-opening, ed, at its rear end, and with an opening, ed, to admit the light at its opposite end. It is also constructed with openings at its side, which may be closed by suitable sliding or hinged doors to give ready facilities for examining the inner mechanism. This case can also be made so as to have drawers, as shown, for holding the pictures.
b is an adjustable stand for holding the condensing-lens b. It is held in guides or loops, so that it can be moved to and fro and adjust the lens b nearer to or farther away from the end of the objective-tube a. The lenses 1) are supported in line between the light-receiving opening a and the inner end of the objectivetube.
A To the rear end ofthe box or casing a, I have hinged a series of flaps, so constructed and arranged that they may be folded back and united together and form a lamp-chamber, 0, having all the requisite facilities for holding the lamp d and for ventilation and draft to carry off any smoke that may arise from the flame.
Thelamp-chamberis formed by the side flaps, c 0 hinged to the vertical corners of the rear of the casing a, the top flap, c and bottom flap, c, hinged to the upper and lower horizontal corners. The side flaps, c 0 are made of same size as the sides of the box a, so that they will fold over and neatly cover the latter when the lantern is out of use. The top flap, 0 is made long enough so that when it is set in a vertical position it will close one end of the dome which forms the chimney of the lantern. On the upper end of the flap 0 there is provided a small angular slot, 0 for holding the edge of a supplemental slot, hereinafter described. The un der flap, 0, has its outer end supported by a short hinged flap, 0 which rests on the table, thus providing a stand or support for the lamp d. The flap c is also made of proper width for the lamp-chamber, and the sides 0 0 fold back against it and are supported thereby.
c is a supplemental flap hinged to the outer end of the side 0 and forms the outer end wall of the lamp chimney.
e is an arm or short flap. hinged to the outer end of the side or wall 0 and fol end wall, e, and to it is hinged the reflector f in proper position to throw the light of lamp (1 into the objective-tube a. and reflector f are so arranged that they will fold over the front end of the casing a and bring the reflectorinto the casing through the opening a and in front of the objective'tube, as shown in Fig. 5.
g is a roof-flap hinged to the top edge of the side wall, 0, and to the rear end of this roof-flap there is hinged a triangular or gable flap, 9,
which has on its under edge a slot, 9 which looks over the top edge of the side wall, 0
h is another roof-flap, hinged to the top edge The arm or flap e I of the side wall, 0 and when raised it lies snugly against the edge of the gable-flap g, and is arranged to provide a narrow opening or draftspace, 71/, between its top edge and the top edge of roof-flap g.
h is a com b-flap, which bends over the draftspace 7L2, and enters the slot 0 in the flap 0 When these several flaps are folded together and locked they form a close chamber provided with a dome, the latter serving as the chimney of the flame-chamber.
The device, when folded, forms a neat compactbox, (shown in Fig. 6,) and will occupy but small space.
Any ordinary lamp can be used, or a gas-jet may be carried into the lamp-chamber in Wellknown manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In a magic lantern, the combination, with the main box or casin g containing the objecttube and lenses, of the side flaps, c 0 and top flap,c hinged to the rear end ofthe main casing,
to the outer end of the flap or wall 0 all arranged to fold around the casing a, or to be unfolded and locked together and form a lamp or flame chamber, 0, substantially as set forth.
2. In a magic lantern constructed with a series of hinged flaps which may be unfolded and formed into a flame or lamp chamber, the combination, with the hinged side 0, ot' a re? flector, f, hinged by a suit-able arm or flap to the outer end of the side 0, so that it may be turned to throw the light into the objectivetube or be turned into the objective-opening a when the device is folded together, substantially as set forth.
