Description

Sept. 9,' 1947. A. BOSSART DEVICE FOR DRAINING UMBRELLAS Filed June 28, 1945 f my Patented Sept. 9, 1947 UNITED STATES. PATENT orrlcs Application June 28, 1945, SerialNo. 602,011 In Switzerland November 20, 1944 the closed position of the flap the container is.
firmly clamped to the umbrella.
In order to improve or ensure the firm connection between the container and the umbrella, the flap and the corresponding semi-cylindrical portion of the container may advantageously be internally padded with a resilient mass for instance, spongy rubber.
A tension device preferably consisting of a rubber cord may be provided in such a manner that it tends to hold the flap both in the closed and in the open position. A handle or fingerpiece may be provided upon the flap to facilitate manipulation.
Two constructional forms of the invention are shown in the accompanying drawings by way of example.
Figs. 1 to 4 show the first construction, Fig. 1 being a sectional elevation of the complete draining device in its operative position and with the umbrella end or point inserted into the device.
Fig. 2 is an elevation at right angles to the sectional elevation of Fig. 1 with the flap in the closed position.
Fig. 3 is an elevation corresponding to Fig. 2 but showing the flap in the open position.
Fig. 4 is a top view of the container corresponding to Fig 1.
Figs. 5 to 7 show the second construction, Fig. 5 being a sectional elevation and Figs. 6 and 7 showing a resilient holding device in elevation and top view.
Referring now to Figs. 1 to 4, I indicates a waterproof container. This may be made of various materials for instance, artificial moulding material, plastic, stiff waxed fabric, papiermach, thin aluminium, or hard rubber. The lower part of the container may be made of waterproof fabric for instance, oiled silk, impregnated cotton, or the like. The rain-water which has accumulated in the container is indicated by the numeral 2 and the inserted end of 7' Claims. (Cl. 135-48) the umbrella by the numeral 31 Preferably different models should be used for gentlemens and ladies umbrellas. The upper part of the container shown inFigs. 1 to 4 consists of a portion la permanently attached to the container which is, of semi-cylindrical shape, and the semicylindrical flap lb. The flap lb is pivotally mounted upon the container 1 at lc by a hinge. Both the portion. Ia and the flap lb are inter nally padded with a resilient mass 4 the object of which is to absorb water running down from the fabric of the umbrella and transfer said Water tothe container, also to improve the connection between the container and the umbrella. The resilient mass may preferably consist of spongy rubber or similar material.
The flap lb is provided with a handle or fingerpiece 5 to facilitate its manipulation. Rubber pulls 6 provided on both sides of the container serve to hold the flap both in the closed and in the open position.
Instead of rubber pulls 6, other devices might be used, for instance, an elastic band might be provided and the upper part of the container might also be somewhat resilient to enable the end of the umbrella to be inserted into the resilient upper part which is then firmly held upon the umbrella by the resilient band.
Instead of a flap various other holding devices might be used, for instance, a clamping device might be provided inside the container which whilst allowing of the end of the umbrella to be inserted into the container, will firmly hold the inserted umbrella end. Such a device is for instance, shown in Figs. 5 to '7 and consists of a ring formed with springs 'i. This ring is inserted into the top part of the container l and is held therein by projections 8 formed on the inside of the container. In this construction the container may be provided at the top with a ring 9 made of water absorbing material for instance, spongy rubber, and held by projections it formed in the container.
I claim:
1. A draining device 'for umbrellas comprising in combination: a watertight container and means for detachably attaching said watertight container to the end of an umbrella, said means comprising a semi-cylindrical top portion of the container and a corresponding semi-cylindrical flap pivotally mounted on said container, said top portion of the container and said flap in its closed position being adapted to grip the end of the umbrella.
2. A draining device for umbrellas comprising in combination: a waterproof container having a semi-cylindrical top portion; a semi-cylindrical flap pivotally mounted on said container and adapted. in its closed position to grip together with said top portion of the container the end of the umbrella and means for holding said flap both in the closing and in the open position.
3. A draining device for umbrellas comprising in combination: a waterproof container having a semi-cylindrical top portion; a. semi-cylindrical flap pivotally mounted on said container and adapted in its closed position to grip together with said top portion of the container the end of the umbrella and means for holding said flap both in the closing and in the open position said means consisting of a resilient pull device fixed at one end to the container and at the other end to the flap.
4. A draining device for umbrellas comprising in combination: a watertight container having a semi-cylindrical top portion; a semi-cylindrical flap pivotally mounted on said container and adapted together with the semi-cylindrical top portion of said container to grip the end of the umbrella; said semi-cylindrical top portion of the container and said semi-cylindrical flap being padded with a resilient water absorbing material,
5. A draining device for umbrellas comprising in combination: a watertight container having a semi-cylindrical top portion; a semi-cylindrical flap pivotally mounted on said container and adapted in its closing position to grip in conjunction with the semi-cylindrical top of the container the end of an umbrella; and two rubber cord fixed to said flap and said container and adapted to hold said flap both in its open and in its closed position.
6. A draining device for umbrellas comprising in combination: a watertight container having a semi-cylindrical top portion; a semi-cylindrical flap pivotally. mounted on said container and adapted in its closing position to grip in conjunction with the semi-cylindrical top of the container the end of an umbrella; and two rubber cords fixed to said flap and said container and adapted to hold said flap both in it open and in its closed position said semi-cylindrical top portion of the container and said flap being padded with a Water absorbing material.
'7. A draining device for umbrellas comprising in combination; a waterproof container having a top portion padded with water absorbing resilient material and adapted to grip the lower end of an umbrella, and spring means inside said Waterproof container for clamping the tip of the umbrella.
