1 Claim. (01. 206-44) The invention relates to display containerswith extensions for use with deep covers.
More particularly, the invention is directed to an improved hollow body for the type of containers for receiving and positioning therein one or more bottles and/or other articles, the upper panel of such hollow body being provided with openings corresponding in number to the number of such articles, a feature of the invention residing in the hollow body being of collapsible formation, preferably of a single blank, and provided at its base with mutually spaced extensions for limiting and supporting the cover which encompasses the contained article or articles and substantially encloses the hollow body.
Heretofore containers of the above general nature have been marketed, the hollow body, however, being of rigid formation, 1. e., not collapsible, and comprising a, number of parts requiring assembly and gluing, as well as finishing the exposed faces of the assembled parts with the desired material.
Pursuant to the present invention, and particularly the preferred embodiments thereof serving as article display containers, the hollow body is preferably formed of a single blank of foldable sheet material such as paperboard, having a finished or printed surface on one side, and which upon being blanked, out and scored, is folded and readily set-up. The thus set-up hollow body has all of its exposed faces suitably finished.
For purposes of display of articles, the top panel of the hollow body is provided with a number of openings, the periphery of each of which conforms closely to the periphery of the article inserted therein, and cooperating with flaps hinged laterally relative to the base panel which flaps, when folded inwardly of the hollow body upon the base panel, serve to reinforce the stated extensions of the base, such reinforcing flaps at their free ends being each indentured with a periphery conforming also to the periphery of the article displayed, and additionally in cooperation with such indentured reinforcing flaps there are provided flaps hingedly connected to the end flaps of the hollow container which last named flaps serve as tuck flaps overlying said reinforcing flaps and also each indentured at its free end of like periphery and coinciding with the indentured periphery of its associated reinforcing flap, said coinciding peripheries serving as abutments in stably retaining the displayed article.
Further features and objects of the invention will be more fully understood from the following 2 detailed description and from the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a plan of a blank, cut and scored, of a hollow body exemplifying a preferred embodiment of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the hollow body upon setting-up the blank shown in Fig. 1, one end of the hollow body being shown unassembled to afford view of otherwise hidden parts;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the completed container, including the set-up hollow body of Figs. 1 and 2, and a conventional deep cover, the latter being indicated in dash outline. In the instance illustrated, the container is shown enclosing a stencil outfit of two bottles and two applicators;
Fig. 4 is a central transverse sectional view of Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 is a central longitudinal sectional view of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings:
As an illustration of practical application of embodiments of the invention, Fig. 3 depicts a stencil outfit positioned in the hollow body Ill, comprising two bottles, indicated H and i2, and their respective applicators lla and 82a. Accordingly, the upper panel llla of the hollow body Hi is provided with four openings respectively designated l3, M, It and It. The deep cover for the hollow body It is indicated at ll, in dash outline.
In the illustrated embodiment, the hollow body is shown provided at its opposite ends with the extensions l8, I9, upon which rest the edges of the corresponding sides of the deep cover II when the cover encloses the hollow body.
As indicated above, the hollow body is preferably formed of a single blank. One such single blank is illustrated in Fig. 1 and indicated generally 20. Any suitable pliable sheet material such as paperboard may be employed. Desirably, the blank 20 is coated on one face with finish paper, the coated or finished face being that appearing in view in Fig. 1. The blanking, cutting and scoring may be performed by single operation.
The essential parts of the blank comprise the panel Ilia which, as above pointed out, is the upper wall or top of the hollow body It.
Hingedly connected at the opposite ends of the panel Illa by score lines 2|, 2!, are panels 22,22, respectively serving as the end panels of the hollow body. Such end panels, when set-up, are respectively held in position by suitable means,
3 such as me sets of side flaps 23, 29, and cooperating tuck flaps 24.
The panel liib is the base of the hollow body 10. The panel lllb is hingedly connected with the top panel 10a per the intermediate panel 29 defined by the indicated marginal score lines. Two of the side flaps 23, 29, are shown hingedly connected to the intermediate panel 25. The lines of scoring of the flaps 29 are respectively in alignment with the score lines 2i, 2!, oi the panel illa.
As appears from Fig. 1, the base panel-I01: is defined by its lateral score lines 28, 26, and to provide the above-referred-to extensions l8, IQ, for the base of the hollow body It, the score lines 28, 26, are respectively positioned at a spacing fronione another greater than the spacing between the score lines 2|, 2|. oi the top panel Illa, thus increasing the dimension of length of the base panel ib, the direction of length being in the horizontal direction of the blank, as viewed in Fig. 1.
Preferably, the outward displacement of the score lines 26, 26, respectively relative to the score lines 21. 2|, is equalized, thus providing for substantially equal extensions l8, [9, for the base of the hollow body I 0.
Flaps 21, 21, are shown hingedly connected to the base panel b; these fiaps serve as reinforc ing flaps of the base panel and its extensions l8, [9. The end flap 28 is shown hinged lengthwise of the base panel 19?). 29 is the panel of the remaining side of me hollow body l0. Two of the end flaps 23 are hin edly connected at opposite margins of the panel 29.
Fig. 2 indicates generally the manner of setting-up the blank 20 to form the hollow body 10. As viewed in the drawings, one end of the hollow body, 1. e., its more remote end as viewed in Fig. 2, is shown closed. The unclosed end of the hollow body is completed by first folding in the flap 21, then folding in the side flaps 23, 23, and, finally, folding in the end panel 22 and its tuck flap 24.
It will be observed that th'e end flaps 29, 23, see Fig. 2, are cut away as indicated at 30, 39, to accommodate the double thickness of the respective base extensions l8, l9,.iormed by folding and inserting the reinforcing flaps 21, 21 inwardly of the hollow body, and thickness of the asso-- ciated tuck flaps 24, 24. The blank 20, Fig. 1, shows its four end fiaps 29 thus cut away. Such provision of the concerned parts facilitates the assembly in setting-up the hollow body, insures self-locking of the completed assembly, and imparts thereto symmetry and artistic appearance.
It will be observed that the tuck flaps 24, 24, and also the reinforcing flaps 21, 2'1, are correspondingly indentured, specifically segmentally of a circle, in this instance each conforming to the periphery of its associated opening I3 or 14 in the top panel Illa and in turn to the periphery of the bottle, Ii or 12, displayed, the periphery of the indenture of each tuck flap 24 and its associated reinforcing flap 2l coinciding with one another, serving as abutments for stably locating the bottoms of the bottles H, l2, fiatwise upon the inner face of the base'panel I 0b.
Preferably, th'eopenings l9, l4, l5, IS, in this instance of circular configuration, are provided on the top panel 10a by cutting lines extending the major part of its concerned circular periphery, thus giving rise to the longer ton ues Ila, Ila, and to shorter tongues for the smaller openings l5, 19. These tongues serve as frictional elements for retaining the respective articles. In the instance of the longer tongues Ila, a, they may be dimensioned to abut the inner face of the bottom panel when the respective bottles ll. 12, are being moved into position within the retaining openings l3, 14.
It will be observed that the extensions I 9, IQ, of the base of the hollow body M, as formed from the blank illustrated in Fig. 1, exemplifying a preferred embodiment of the invention, afford the advantages ofenhanced rigidity and strength of the extensions by reason of the folding over and doubling of the sheet material thereat; and also exposing to view the finished or printed face of the sheet material, as well as effectively supporting the cover in elevated relation to the top surfaces of the contained articles.
whereas I have described my invenion by reference to specific forms thereof. it will be underthe opposite longitudinal margins of said top panel; a bottom panel hinged to one of said side panels, said bottom panel having a length greater than that of said top panel and providing extensions equally beyond the respective end margins of said top panel: reinforcing flaps respectively hinged to the opposite end margins of said bottom panel, said reinforcing flaps when folded inwardly oi the set-up hollow container serving to reinforced said extensions; end panels hingedly connected to the end margins of said top panel; tuck flaps respectively hingedly connected to the outer margins of said end panels, said tuck flaps being arranged to be inserted inwardly of the set-up hollow container and overlying said reinforcing flaps, the free ends of said tuck fiaps and of said reinforcing flaps being coincidentally indentured of like periphery and in registry with the associated opening of said top panel; and side flaps hinged to said side panels and foldable inwardly for holding said end panels and said reinforcing and tuck flaps in their respective set-up positions.
