" UBA PALMER, OF GREEN SPRING, OHIO.
WH EAT-H EATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,685, dated June 7, 1881.
Application filed March 25, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, URA H. PALMER, of Green Spring, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wheat-Heaters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
. which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to wheat-heaters; and it consists in a heater constructed substantially as will hereinafter be described, and specified in the claim, whereby the grain is thoroughly heated by means of direct contact with heated air. j
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of my heater. Fig. 2 is a detached view of the inclines through which the: grain passes, showing the mannerof perforating the same.
A is the frame or outer case of my heater, which is preferably made of metal. a is a hopper, which is placed on the top of the frame or case A, and serves as a means for feeding the grain to the heater.
BB B B are a series of inclines, made of perforated sheet metal, which lead from the bottom of the hopper a and extend diagonally across the frame or case A and from side to side of the same.
0 is a discharge pipe or passage, which is placed below the last of the series of inclines B B B B d is a dust-board, of which there may be one below each incline, which serves to collect the dust which may fall from the grain as it passes At the lower portion of this dust-board I provide an opening, d, through which the dust may be removed. This opening is kept closed while the heater is in operation, to prevent the escape of the heated air.
D is a heater, which may be of any desired or suitable kind, this forming no part of my invention. e is an opening in the top of the frame or case A, through which the air pa sses after it has performed its work. 7
The operation of my device is as follows: The hoppera being filled with grain, the grain passes along the inclineB to the opposite side of the frame or case A, when it passes on the incline B, and so on to the last incline, when it is discharged through the discharge pipe or passage 0.
It will be seen by the drawings that I per:
forate the inclines B B B B at both top and bottom. My reason for this is to allow the heated air to pass through the grain as it runs down the said inclines and thoroughly warm it. The heated air, as it ascends, passes. first through the grain inthe lower incline and then through the grain in the next higher one, and so on until it passes 0E through the opening 0. As the grain passes over the inclines the dust or dirt falls through the perforations in the same and onto the dust-board d, where it is collected and removed through the opening (1 in the frame or case A.
In the drawings I have shown only four inclines, B B B B butI do not limit myself to the number of inclines employed, which may be more or less, as the inclines are shorter or longer.
What I claim is In a wheat-heater, the combinationof the inclines B B B B and dust-board d, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
In testimony whereof Iliave signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
URA H. PALMER.
Witnesses:
ARTHUR W. NIoHoLs, HENRY SGHNEERE.
