Description
' I. S. MUSSETTER.
Cultivator:
No. 242,6?8. Patented June 7,1881.
INVENTOR ATTORNEY UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC S. MUSSETTER, OF OAKLAND, OHIO.
cu LTIVATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,678, dated June 7, 1881. g
Application filed April 4, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC S. MUSSETTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Clinton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification, in which the figure is a perspective illustrating my invention.
My invention has relation to wheeled cultivators; and my improvements have for their object to provide means whereby a straightline draft may be always secured in the various positions which the beam may occupy.
My improvements consist in the peculiar construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, having reference, principally, to the combination, with the cultivatorbeam and a link by which it is secured to a swiveled axle-clip,of a system of levers, whereby as the beam is swung toward or from the tongue said link is correspondingly moved in order to maintain the line of draft straight or parallel withlthe said tongue.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A indicates the axle, which is formed with an arch, A, to which the tongueB is bolted.
0 represents one of the journals for receiv ing the Wheels. Between the journals and the arch, or on the straight portions of the axle, are secured castings, (one of which is shown at D,) which form swivel-clips or hinges. Said clips consist each of a plate, (I, with knuckles or eyes at (1, through which the axle passes, as shown.
E is a collar fitting between the knuckles, and made fast to the axle by a set-screw, e, the plate (I being notched at (1 to afford space for said collar. By these means the clip is swiveled on the axle and free to vibrate vertically. It is also capable of being adjusted toward or from the wheel, and secured against accidental movement lengthwise of the axle when so adjusted. v
(ModeL) F represents a link, pivoted to the clip D at f and to the point of the beam G of the cultivator at g.
H is a bell-crank lever, also pivoted to the clip D at h.
I is a long rod or lever, pivoted to the outer arm, h, of the bell-crank lever H at t, and to the beam G at 2", beside or close to the handle y.
K is a short link or lever, pivoted at one end to the link F at f and at its opposite end to the inner arm, h, of the-bell-crank lever at k. By means of these connections a straight-line draft for the beam is secured, for whenever the handle g is pushed or pulled laterally, moving the beam G out or in, as the case may be, the link F will be correspondingly moved, thereby always keeping the point 9 of said beam where the draft is applied and the handle at the same relative distance from the tongue, the draft on the beam being always parallel, or approximately parallel, with said tongue.
I have shown and described only one side or one half of the cultivator; but both sides are designed to be the same, the beams on either side of the tongue being movableindependently ofeach other, so as to bring them closer together or farther apart, and to be lifted or depressed either separately or together.
What I claim asmy invention is as follows:
In a cultivator, the combination, with the clip D, of the link F, beam Gr,bell-crank lever H, rod I, and lever or link K, whereby the point of the beam is moved correspondingly with lateral movement .of the handle of said beam and a straight-line draft secured for the latterin every position, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of March, 1881.
ISAAC S. MUSSETTER.
Witnesses 0. W. SWAIN, ISAAC WORTHINGTON.
