Description

(No Model.)
S. F. McG-OWN. Grub Puller:
No.. 242,671. PatentedJuhe 7,188].
INVENTOR WITN ESSES r 1 ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
SAMUEL F. MCGOWN, OF SOUTH'UNION, KENTUCKY.
GRUB-FULLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,671, dated June '7, 1881.
Application filed March 31, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known. that I, SAMUEL F. McGowN, of South Union, in the county of Logan and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grub-Pullers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing. which forms a part of this specification.
The figure of the drawing is a perspective view of my improved grub-puller.
This invention relates to alrimplement for pulling grubs, tobacco-stumps, and the like; and it consists in the improved features of construction and combination hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawing, A designates an S-shaped arm, having at its lower end the fork B, and at its upper end thejaw G,extending laterally from the left side thereof.
D designates astraight arm, bifurcated at its rear portion to embrace the S-shaped arm A, which is connected thereto by a pivot-bolt, E. This arm D is also provided at its front end with ajaw, 0, extending therefrom in the same direction as thejaw O. In the bifurcation of the arm D, and in the rear of the pivotal connection between the arms A and l), a handle, F, is secured by lateral bolts G G.
To the under faces of the arms or prongs of the forkB an oak board, I, is secured by screws.
The fork is curved, as shown, and the board I will be made to conform to the curvature by steamingit or otherwise bending it before or at the time of securing it. This forms a curved shoe or base, on which the implement may be slid from place to place, and when the grub or stalkhas been reached thejaws may be opened by elevating the handle, and the grub or stalk grasped between them by depressing the handle, after which the weight of the operator may be thrown upon the handle, which, in conjunction with the straight arm D, forms a lever, and this operation will rock the base or shoe which forms a fulcrum for the lever, and the grub or stalk will readily leave the ground.
The utility of the invention is obvious. It
- may be readily slipped from place to place, the
grnbs grasped by the jaws, the lever operated, and the grub pulled and dropped. Besides, the
device is simple, cheap, and may be easily operated.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an implement for pulling'grubs and the like, the S-shaped arm A, having jaw O and fork B, provided with the board'I, in combination with the straight arm D, provided with the jaw O and handle F, and connected with the arm A by the pivot-bolt E, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
'2. In a grhbbiiig implement, the fork B, provided with board I, by which it may he slipped to place and rocked to pull the grub, as set forth.
3. A grabbing implement the arms of which are provided with jaws extending laterally therefrom, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL F. MOGOWN.
