SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,846, dated August 9, 1887.

'invented new and useful Improvements in Shears, of which the following is a specification. 1
My invention relates to improvements in shears for euttingfmetal; and it consists of the peculiar combination and novel construction and arrangenlent of the various parts for service, substantially as hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved shears for cutting sheet, bar, and other metal, which shall be capable of exerting great leverage and force upon the work to easily sever the latter, and which shall also possess superior advantages over all others` which have preceded it in points of simplicity, strength, and durability of construction, efciency of operation, and cheapness of manufacture. f
A `further object of my invention is to provide a metal-cutting shears with means whereby the jaws thereof can be Aseparated a greater or less distance to adapt them to act upon different thicknesses of work.
In the drawings hereto annexed, which illustrate metal cutting shears embodying my present improvements, Figure 1 is an elevation taken from one side of the machine with the handlever thereof depressed... Fig. 2 is a similar View taken from t-he opposite side of the machine with the hand-lever elevated. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the jaws, on the line w w 'of Fig.1, looking :in the direction indicated by the ar-g row therein. Fig. 4 is a detached perspective view of the lower jaw with the cutter-blade thereof removed. Fig. 5 .is a detail view of the pivoted link.
Referring to' the drawings, in which likeletters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the figures, A designates the horizontal basel upon which my improved metal-cutting Y shears are mounted, and this base is elevated which are passed the screws orl bolts, which secure the jaw upon the base very firmly and rigidly, and the front end of the said fixed jaw is curved upwardly at its front end, so that it is elevated above and arranged out of contact with the base at the said front end, as shown.
Each of the jaws are provided at their front ends with enlarged heads D, which are preferably curved on their neutral edges and made straight on their workingedges, as shown, and in the opposing faces and working-edges of theseheads ofthe fixed and mov- 'able jaws are formed recesses d, in which are fitted steel cutters or blades D', which lie flush with the sides and edges of the heads of the jaws. These cutters or blades are removably secured in place by means of screws or other suitable fastenings, and their outer edges are inclined, as shown, to adapt them to sever or cut the metal very smoothly -and evenly. These blades are very strong and durable, and they can be removed when desired to sharpen them or substitute others therefor, as is obvious. Their operative edges are formed 4*near their rear ends with the registeringnotches or curved portions D, to adapt them to cut wire of any diameter, the edges of the said curved recesses being beveled and sharpened. f l
The rear end of the rigid or fixed blade B of the shears is bifurcated, to provide the parallel ears or lugs f, and in these lugs is pivoted an adjustable link, F, by means of a removable pin or bolt,f.
The opposite end of the movable pivoted jaw C is likewise bifurcated, to provide parallel ears or lugs, between which are arranged an integral lug, 1L, on'the rear end of a handlever, H, the said lever H being pivotally connected with the'rear end of the pivoted jaw by a suitable pin or shaft, h", that passes through the ears of the jaw and the lug of the lever, as shown. The extreme rear end of the lever is provided with a bent or inclined arm, I, which is arranged at an angle to the lever and inelines upwardly therefrom when the latter is ICO in a horizontal depressed position. The said arm is provided at its outer extremity with two or more transverse openings, one of which is adapted to align with a similar opening in the upper bifurcated end of the adjustable link F, the link and the lever being connected by means of a suitable pin or bolt, 1'., that is passed through the aligned openings therein, so that the point ol" connection with the lever and link can be varied or adjusted according to the leverage desired, as is obvious.
The upper end ofthe link F is thus pivotal] y and adjustably connected with the rear end of the pivoted lever, and the lower end of the link is likewise connected to the rear end of the fixed jaw. By elevating the link and changing the point of connection between the same and the fixed jaw the rear ends oi' the lever and the pivoted jaw are correspondingly elevated to separate the cutter-blades of the said jaws to a greater or less extent,aud thereby adapt the latter to operate upon work of different thick nesscs. y
The operation of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings. Vhen it is desired to separate the jaws, the free end of the hand-lever is grasped and clevated, thereby oscillating the connecting-link on its pivot and drawing upon the rea-r end of the movable jaw to elevate the latter, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Vhen the lever is elevated, the curved or inclined arm thereof forces the upper end ofthe link (which is conneeted thereto) rearwardly and oscillates the link on its pivot or fulcruin to accommodate the upward movement of the said arm and the rear end of the movable jaw, which is pivoted to the lever at a point some distance in front of the point of connection of the arm with the lilik. rlhe link thus provides amoving fulcrum for the lever, and the latter in turn operates the j aw, thereby providing means which are ca pable of exerting great force or power with the expenditure of minimum exertion on the part ol the operator. By elevating the rear end of the pivoted jaw the front end thereof is lowered, and the cutters or blades thereby separated. The work is now inserted by hand between the cutters and the free end of the lever depressed to elevate the frontend of the v pivoted jaw, and thereby cause the cutters to act upon the work and sever the lattersmoothly and evenly. When it is desired to separate the jaws to a greater distance to adapt them to receive and act upon work of different thicknesses, it is only necessary to elevate the connecting-link F and thereby change the point of connection between the rigid jaw and the link, and the rear endet' the lever and pivoted jaw are also elevated to lower the front end of the pivoted jaw, as will be readily understood.
The pivoted hand-lever is arranged immeY diately above the movable jaw, and when the lever is lowered it comes in contact with the upper side oi' the pivoted jaw, and is thereby limited in its downward movement.
Slight changes in the form and proportion of parts and details of construction may be made without departing from the principle or sacriiicing the advantages of my invention.
By having the hand-lever work over and above the cutters and connected to the movablejaw greater power can be applied. The slot in the link F enables the end ol' thchandlever to work therein.
I-Iaving thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a metal-cutting shears, the combination of a fixed jaw, a movable jaw, a lever pivoted to the movablejaw, and a link inter mediate of the lever and fixed jaw and adjustably and pivotally connected to the said jaw, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
2. In a metal-cutting shears, the combination of a liXed jaw, the movable jaw pivoted thereto, a lever pivoted to the rear end of the movable jaw and having an arm arranged at an angle thereto, and a link pivotal] y and adjustably connected at its ends to the arm of the lever and the rear end of the lixed jaw, substantially as described. Y
3. A metal-cutting shears comprising rccessed jaws, and removable cutters or blades fitted in the recesses of the jaws flush with the Opposing sides thereof, and having curved rccesses in their opposing edges, substantially as specified.
4. In a metal-cutting shears, the combination, with the rigid jaw, of the movable jaw pivoted thereto, the pivoted adjustable link, and the hand-lever pivoted atan intermediate point to the movable j aw and at its end to the said link, said lever swinging down over the movable jaw, as setforth.
