KEES BY` ATTORNEY Patented Aug. 26, 1947 UNITED ASTATES yPATENT OFFICE `(Granted under the act of-March 3,1883, as amended April 30, 192,8; 370 0. G. 757) This invention relates to an arbor, and it is more particularly concerned with'an arbor about which various circular, or disk-like, toolsimay be readily mounted.
It is an object of this invention to provide an improved arbor about which to mount various tools or other work pieces which are to be rotated.
A further object is to provide an arbo-r of this character about which the desired tools may be readily engaged, and from which they may be as readily disengaged, this without the employment of bolts, nuts, and other conventional fastening devices.
In accomplishing these and other objects of the present invention, I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred form of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
The figure illustrated is an exploded View showing in perspective an arbor embodying the features of the present invention, together `with a tool to be mounted about said arbor.
Referring more in detail to the drawing:
The arbor has a drive shaft I having a reduced end portion 2 thereon arranged to be connected with a prime mover (not shown). The said drive shaft i also has an axial bore 3 in the end thereof opposite said reduced -end portion 2, a pin l4 mounted transversely of the shaft and passing across the center of the bore 3, and an enlarged head 5.
The drive shaft I acts as a female member for it receives within its bore 3, a driven shaft, or male member, 6. This male member has an axial bore 'i in the end thereof receivable within the bore 3, and a pair of opposed helical slots 8 are formed inwardly from said end about the bore 1. The shaft Ii also carries an enlarged portion 9 thereon.
When the male member 6 is inserted within the bore 3 in the female member, the slots 8 engage the pin A, and as the female member is turned in a counter-clockwise direction (as viewed facing the open end of bore 3) with respect to the male member, the pin 4 advances within the slots 8 until it is positioned against opposed bottom portions I of the said slots. The connection so made is maintained, for as the female member l is thereafter turned in a counter-clockwise direction as by the prime mover, the male element 6 will lag behind to an extent sufficient to maintain the pin 4 in constant engagement with the opposed slot bottoms Ill.
Operation,
The manner of operation of the arbor described .shown in `outline at Il, having an opening I2 in the center thereof. The slotted end of the shaft 6 is passed through the tool opening I2, and the junction between the shaft members I and 6 is effected lby causing the pin 4 to be positioned at the slot bottoms Il) in the manner described above. One side of the tool will then be positioned against the enlarged head 5, while the opposite side of the tool will lie against the enlargement 9. If desired, washers (not shown), fabricated of rubber or a similar material, may be employed on the shaft 6 against the sides of the tool I I, thereby increasing the friction between the tool and the adjacent enlarged portions 5 and 9 on the shafts I and 6, respectively, and minimizing any tend.- ency of the tool to slip on the shaft This frictional engagement, together with that existing between the pin 4 and the walls of the slots 8, is responsible for preventing the shaft 6 and any tool carried thereby from spinning out of engagement with shaft I when rotation of the latter is stopped, as by disconnecting or turning off the prime mover.
It is apparent from the above description that any tool of the general type shown at I I may be readily mounted on, or disengaged from, the apparatus described, thereby obviating the use of the customary nuts, bolts, and other cumbersome fastening devices.
The invention described herein may be manufactured and used by or for the Government of the United States of America for governmental purposes without the payment of any royalties thereon or therefor.
I claim:
1. In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, a drive shaft, arranged to be connected with a prime mover, having a round axial bore in an end thereof, a pin mounted transversely thereof and passing across the center of said bore, and an enlarged head portion positioned about said end, together with a driven shaft having an axially bored end portion receivable in the bore in said drive shaft and extending past the Vpin mounted therein, the said end portion on said driven shaft having a pair of opposed helical slots cut in from the said end which receive said pin and, on relative rotation of one shaft to the other, guide the pin into position against opposed bottom portions of said slots, said driven shaft also having an enlargement thereon at a position spaced from said head portion on said driven shaft when the said pin is positioned against the opposed slot bottoms.
2. In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, a drive shaft having a round axial bore in an end thereof and having a pin mounted transversely thereof passing across the center of said bore, and a driven shaft having an axially bored end portion receivable in the bore in said drive shaft and extending past the pin mounted therein, the said end portion on said driven shaft having opposed helical slots cut in from the said end Which receive said pin and, on turning of the drive shaft relative to the driven shaft, guide said pin into position against opposed bottom portions of said slots.
3. In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, axially aligned work holding members, one of which is arranged for connection to a prime mover, said members comprising a female element having a socket in the end thereof and a pin mounted transversely of the said socket, and a male element receivable in said socket, said male element having an axial bore in the receivable end thereof and having helical slot means extending inwardly from said receivable end for engaging said pin.
