J. A. BEAMISDERFER. Thill Support.
No. 242.583. Patented June 7, |881.
- C@ 1, .rtw By 1&1. www Y NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THILL-SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 242,583, dated June '7, 1881.
Application led April 14, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. BEAMrs DERFER, a citizen of the United States, residing at (lampbelltown, in the county ot' Lebanon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certu`n new and usefulImprovementsin Shaft or Thill Supports; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and cxactdescription ot theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or tigures ot' reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a top view or plan ot' myimproved support as applied to the shaft or thill, Fig. 2, a longitudinal vertical section ofthe support;
Fig. 3, detail view of locking-bolt.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in thill-supports for wagons and other vehicles; and theinvention consists in novel features ot' construction and combination and arrangement of parts, all as will bc hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, A represents the axle, to which the usual thill-boxes, B B, are secured; and O represents the thills.
l) Dl represent vertical supports arranged on opposite sides of the axle A, and clamped thereto by bolts b, passing through said sup ports above and below the axle, and secured by nuls b. The support D is provided with a right-angled extension, d, upon which ismounted a transverse plate, E, which abuts against a flange, d', ot' the extension d. The plate E is provided with a longitudinal slot, c, through which and a hole, d2, in the extension d passes a bolt, e', which, in connection with a nut, e2, secures the plate E to said extension d. The plate E is provided at one end with a transverse socket, F, through which passes a bolt, H, upon which one of the shafts of the thill rests, and by which they are supported when in a raised position. The plate E is also provided with a vertical socket, G, for the reception ofthe bolt when not used for securing the thills in an upright or raised position; and in order to prevent the bolt from loosing or rattlingin the socket G when the vehicle is in motion, a. spring, 7L, is adapted to engage with a notch, h', in said bolt, all as clearly shown in Fig. 2, a slot, g, being cut through one side ot' the socket G, in order that said spring may engage with the bolt. The vertical supports are arranged on the axle close up against the lefthand shaft or thill-box B.
By means of the slot in plate E it can be adj usted forward or backward on the extension d, forsupporting the thills at any desired angle.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a thill-support, the plate E, provided with a transverse socket, F, in combination with a bolt, H, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
2. In a thill-support,-the plate E, provided with the transverse and vertical bolt-sockets F G, substantially as and for thv purpose herein shown and described.
3. In a thill-support, the adjustable plate E, provided with the transverse and vertical boltsockets F G, and means, substantially as described,i'or securing it to the axle of a vehicle.
4. In a thill-support, the plate E, provided with transverse socket F, Vertical socket G, provided with slot g, spring h, and notched bolt H It', substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
5. The herein-described thill-supl'iort, consisting of the vertical supports D D, anged extension d d', slotted plate E, provided with transverse and vertical bolt-sockets F G, and the bolt H, substantially as specified.
ln testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH A. BEAMISDERFER.
