NlTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD VORSTER, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
PACKING BOTTLES AND SIMILAR ARTICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,493, dated June '7, 1881.
Application filed October 11, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom ti may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD VORSTER, a resident of the city of New Orleans, parish of Orleans, and State ofLouisiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Packing Bottles, Jars, and other like Articles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and correct description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing" making a part of this specification Figure 1 represents a top view of a case, the cover of which is. removed in order to exhibit the packing of bottles, 85c. Fig.2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the line a a thereof, but not showingthe bottlein section. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section through the line b b of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 a section through the horizontal line 0 c of Fig. 2. To the rightand left of Fig. at are representations of bottles, the necks of which are provided with protectors.
As the title indicates, the object of my invention is to pack bottles, jars, and other articles having necks narrower than their bodies, or having one end ot less diameter than the other, in boxes or cases in such manner that a greater number of such articles shall be contained in a box or case of given size.
The nature of my invention consists in packing the bottles, jars, or other like articles in vertical and inverted positions, and in rigidly securing the same by means of keys and dividing as well as sustaining pieces; also, in separating the articles from one another by means of pieces of thick soft paper or other suitable material placed between or around them, as will beherein after more full y set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
To more fully understand the invention reference mustbe had to the accompanying drawings, on which- A represents an ordinary case, in which the bottles or other articles to bepacked are placed in a vertical position, as at B B, &c., space beingleft between eaclilongitudinal and transverse row for the reception of the dividing and sustaining'strips d e, the latter, e, placed at right angles to the former, and the height of the two combined being equal to the height of the keys f g, that are dropped in at one side and end of the box. These ke vs not only serve to secure the above articles, but also act as sustaining-pieces for a side and end row of the second series, the latter inverted, and so arranged that their necks or smaller diameters shall pass between the necks or smaller diameters of those already in position, and rest on the sustaining-pieces above mentioned.
To separate the articles from one another strips of thick soft paper h t', or other suitable material, are placed between the first series previous to the insertion of the second series, or the heads and necks of each are furnished with protectors, as shown at 70, l, or m.
Duplicates of the sustaining and dividing pieces are then inserted in position between the ends of the last series, after which duplicate key-pieces are inserted at right angles to the same, and diagoi'ially opposite to those previously mentioned, when the box is ready for closing.
If desired, sheets of thick soft paper or other material may be placed around the inside of the case and beneath and above the articles that are packed therein.
, Having described myinvention. whatlclaim as new, and'desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of two or more rows of bottles resting on their base, two or more rows of inverted bottles, the necks of the upright alternating withthe necks of the inverted bottles, and two series ot'partitions and keys maintaining in position the upright and the inverted rows of bottles, substantially as set forth.
2. The means hereinbefore described of packing bottles and similar articles for shipment, consisting of a box or case, dividing and sustaining strips (1 0, keys f g, and the soft thick paper It i, all arranged in the manner as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereto si ned my name.
EDWD. VORSTER. In presence of-- EUG- KRosr, PETER J, FINNEY.
