Description
S. H. SEIBERT. Ditching Machine.
Patented June 7,1881,
(No Model.)
WITNESSES IINITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SOLOMON H. SEIBERT, OF LANCASTER, ILLINOIS.
DlTCHlNG-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 242,481, dated June '7, 1881. Application filed April 5, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SOLOMON H. Summer, of Lancaster, in the county of (lass and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements'in Ditching-llIachines; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description ot'thc invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accom pan yin g drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view, and Fig. 2is a longitudinal vertical sectional view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
This invention relates to ditchinganachines5 and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafterfully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents a suitable f -nne mounted upon an axle, B, having wheels 0 (J, one or both of which must be secured upon the axle, in order to cause the latter to revolve as the machine travels over the ground.
To the under side of the front beam, D, of the frame two beams or arms, E E, are hinged, as shown, in such a manner as to be capable of moving in a vertical plane. To the rear ends of said arms, which project in a rearward direction under the axle of the machine, is pivoted the scoop F, which may consist simply of a suitably curved and braced sheet of iron, substantially as represented in the drawings.
The scoop F is provided with rearward-projecting arms G G, between which is pivoted a frame, H, consisting of a pair of side pieces, I, slightly curved, as shown, and connected by braces J J.
At the upper and lower ends, and near the center of the frame, are journaled rollers K K L, and the shaft M ot' the upper roller K is provided with a pulley or band-wheel, N, connected, by a chain or band, 0, with a pulley, P, mounted or keyed upon the axle B, as shown.
Q is an endless apron traveling upon the rollers K K and supported upon the roller L, and provided with buckets It, which receive the dirt from the rear end of the scoop and carry it to a pair of inclined chutes, S S, secured by brackets T upon the rear side of frame H, and which damp or drop the dirt upon the sides of the ditch.
The arms E are each provided with a series of perforations, U, which are to be connected by adjustable hooked rodsV with similar perforations IV in the front edge of the scoop, thus enabling the latter to make a deep or shallow furrowor ditch. as circumstances shall require.
The frame H is band 0.
The tongue or pole X, which extends longitudinally across the frame, may be provided with means for attaching a seat for the driver.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation of my invention will be readily understood. It is simple, inexpensive, and easily operated.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent ot the United States 1. In a ditching-machine, the combination, with asui table carrying-frame, A, of the hinged arms E E, pivoted scoop F, and adjustable connecting-rods V, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. As an improvementin ditching-machines, the combination of the axle B, having wheels 0 G and pulley P,frame A, having hinged arms E, scoop F, connecting-rods V V, and the elevator-frame H, pivoted between brackets projectin g rearward from the scoop, all arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose set i'orth.'
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto atlixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SOLOMON HENRY SEIBERT.
