W. O. WITT, Jr. DITGHING MACHINE.
Patented Nov. 4, 1890.

A T T OHWE Y UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM CARROLL WITT, JR, OF J ONESBOROUGH, TEXAS.
DlTCHlNG-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,739, dated November 4, 1890.
Application filed August 4, 1890. Serial No. 360,929- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM CARROLL WITT, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at J onesborough, in the county of Coryell and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ditching-Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make andv use the same, reference being had to the ac companying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to ditching-machines; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevationof my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of Fig. 1.
My invention is described as follows: It consists of the plow-standards A, the front ends of which are fastened securely to a block a, and the rear ends are fixed to the body of the scoop B. Said standards have rigidly attached to them a pair of handles a. Said handles are firmly braced by bars a and a cross-round 0, Extending downward from said standards A, near their front ends, is a pair of cars a, between which is journaled an axle a Said axle has a wheel a provided with cogs a'Q-rigidly attached to it.
The scoop B consists of the points I) and the chute h, fastened together by side plates b Said plates are slightly bent in at their upper edges, so as to bunch the earth.
Immediately in the rear of the scoop B is an elevator-shaft O, the upper end of which rests 011 the round a In said shaft works an endless band 0, provided with elongated cups 0'. Said band passes around a roller 0 journaled in the body of the scoop B and over a roller 0 journaled at the upper end of the elevator-shaft C and between the two sides of the same.
One end of the axle on which roller 0 rotates is provided with a cog-wheel 0 which acts in conjunction with cog-wheels d and c Said cog-wheel c is rigidly attached to one end of a shaft 0, on the other end of which is rigidly secured a cog-whee1c which works in the cogs a of the wheel a. In the rear of said roller 0 and a little below the same, seated in the arms (1', which extend from the elevator-shaft C, is a chute D. Said chute is considerably inclined, and is provided with an endless band 01 which passes over a couple of rollers d Said rollers and band are operated by the cog-wheel d, that meshes with cog-wheel a.
My invention is operated as follows: I apply the motive power to my ditcher and let the point of the scoop enter the earth and let Wheel a run along over the ground. As the wheel a rotates, the cog-wheel 0 working in the cogs a of said wheel a, will revolve the shaft 0, which in turn will revolve the cogwheel 0 As said wheel 0 rotates, it revolves the wheel and roller 0 and 0 This carries the band up and around the two rollers c and c WVhen the cog-wheel c revolves, it rotates the cog-wheel d. This moves the rollers 01 and causes the band (:1 to move around them. As the scoop passes along, the dirt is thrown upon the endless band 0, and with the aid of the elongated cups 0 it is carried to the top of the elevator-shaft, and the traveling band will then throw it over into the chute D, and when in said chute it will either slide down the incline or will be carried by the band 01 to the lower edge of the chute and thrown 011 one side of the ditch.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A ditcher consisting of the standards A, block a, handles a, braces a and round a cars a, axle a and wheel 0,, having cogs a scoop B, provided with points I), chute b, and side plates elevator-shaft 0, its upper end resting on the round a band 0, elongated cups 0, rollers c and c cog-Wheels c c and c shaft 0 inclined chute D, cog-wheel cl, arms d, band (:1 and rollers d all substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM CARROLL \VITT, JR.
