COMBINED EXCAVATOR AND ELEVATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 687,312, dated November 26, 1901.

Be it known that I, ISAIAH D. HUGHES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Horton, in the county of Brown and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Combined Excavator and Elevator, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved combined excavator and elevator for grading, ditching, and similar purposes; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a combined excavator and elevator constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 4. is a detail perspective view of the plows. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the scraper.
In the embodimentof my invention here shown the supporting-frame 1 is pivotally mounted on an axle 2, which has supportingwheels 3. To the axle is attached a draftbar 4., which may be eitheratongue or a reach, according to whether it is desired to attach a team directly thereto or to trail the excavator and elevator in rear of a truck or wagon. Within t-he scope of my invention any suitable runnin g-gear may be employed for carrying the frame 2, and I do not limit myself in this particular.
At the front end of the frame 1 is journaled a shaft 5,whicl1 is provided with sprocket-wheels 6. At the rear end of said frame is journaled a shaft 7, which is provided with sprocketwheels 8. An endless traveling elevating element 9 connects the sprocket-wheels 6 8. In the form of my invention here shown said endless traveling elevator element comprises endless sprocket-chains 10, which engage and connect the sprocket-Wheels 6 8, and suitable transversely-disposed buckets l1, which connect said chains and are carried thereby. Said buckets may be of any suitable size and construction and may be disposed and'secured to the chains any desired' distance apart. The upper lead of the endless traveling elevator is supported and prevented from sagging by rollers 12, which are mounted on frame 1, either as here shown or in any other suitable manner. The frame, and hence the endless traveling elevator carried thereby, is inclined, the front end of ,the said frame being the higher, and to the same is connected a suitable spout or trough 13, into which the endless traveling elevator discharges, said trough or spout serving to convey the excavated earth Yto any desired point to either side of the machine or to any suitable receptacle, as a wagon or -the like, when the excavated earthpis to be transported some distance before being dumped.
Sprocket-wheels 14 rotate with the shaft 2 or With the wheels 3, as may be most desirable, and are connected by endless sprocketchains 15 to sprocket-wheels 16 on the shaft 7. Thereby when the machine is moved forward power is communicated to the endless traveling elevator.
A series of plows 17, of suitable form, are connected to beams 18. The latter have their front ends pivotally attached to the machine. Ashere shown, the front ends of the plowbeams are attached to the axle 2; but this may be modified within the scope of my invention. Thereby the plows are adapted to be raised and lowered, and hence may be caused to operate at any desired depth in the soil or may be raised therefrom when their use is not required. Any suitable means may Within the scope of my invention be employed for raising and lowering the plow. I here show handles for this purpose.
In rear of the plows 17 and in rear of the elevator is a scraper 20, which is preferably of the form here shown and is provided with beams or arms 2l, that extend forward from the sides thereof and are pivotally attached to the machine. In the form of my invention here shown the front ends of said beams or arms 21 are pivotally attached to the shaft 7, and the said scraper is curved and is substantially concentric with shaft 7, so that the buckets 11 as they pass around the sprocket- Wheels 8 become filled by the material thrown up by the scraper. This operation is. indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. l Any suitable means may be employed for raising and lowering the scraper. I here show handles 22 for this purpose. Any suitable means may be employed for securing the plows and scraper at any desired adjustment.
It will be understood that changes in the IOO form, proportion, size, and minor details of the construction may be made Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention, and among such possible changes it may be mentioned that the machine may be constructed to deliver rearwardly as well as forwardly Without the scraper. Also it will be understood that the construction of the truck or supporting elements of the machine may be varied.
Having thus described my invention, I clairn- 1. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a supporting running-gear having an axle-shaft, a pivoted frame carried by said running-gear, an endless traveling elevator carried by said pivoted frame, a revoluble element of said elevator being connected to and driven by power from said axleshaft, plows having their beams pivotally attached to said axle-shaft, and a scraper pivotally attached to the rear of said pivoted elevatorsframe, substantially as described.
2. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a supporting running-gear having an axle-shaft, a frame pivoted on said axle-shaft, an endless traveling element carried by said frame and including a powershaft at the rear end of said frame, connections between said axle-shaft and said powershaft, to convey power to the latter, plows having their beams pivotally attached to said aXle-shaft,and a scraper pivotally attached to said power-shaft, substantially as described.
3. In a machine of the class described, a supporting running-gear having an axle-shaft 2, a pivoted frame carried by said runninggear, an endless traveling elevator carried by said frame, said endless traveling elevator including the power-shaft 7, sprocket-Wheels on said shafts 2 and 7, endless sprocket-chains connecting said sprocketwheels, and a scraper pivotally attached to Ithe rear of said frame, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
