CABINET FOLDING BEDSTEAD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,323, dated May 31, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, JAMES H. HOLLY and JOHN G. KNAPP, both of Warwick, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Cabinet Folding Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification.

The folding bedsteads which have generally been used have been made to simulate when folded up the appearance of a wardrobe or other high article of furniture; and the principal object of our invention is to construct a bedstead so that it may be folded up into small compass to simulate the appearance ofa bureau or other article of furniture of small size.

To this end the invention consists in the combination, with an upright cabinet or case having sides which extend from the top to the bottom, of a front portion fitting within and embraced between said sides, and hinged at its lower edge, so that it may be swung or opened outward and a horizontal shelf which is coincident with the front portion when the latter is swung into a horizontal position, and forms therewith a resting-surface for a bed.

The invention also consists in the combination, with an upright cabinet or case, of a front portion hinged at its lower edge, so that it may be swung downward and outward to form a portion of the resting-surface, and having an end portion, comprising a portion of the resting-surface and a foot-board, and hinged so that it may be turned up at right angles to the front portion when the latteris'to be folded up within the cabinet or case.

We preferablyconibine with the hinged front the hinged end portion, and also the horizontal shelf, forming a continuation of theresting-surface, and when formed of the three portions the resting-surface can be folded very compactly.

The invention also consists in the combination, with an upright cabinet or case having vertically-hinged sides, of a frontportion adapted to fit between and be embraced by the hinged sides when closed, and hinged so that it may be swung down to form a portion ofthe resting-surface, and a horizontal shelf which, when said front is swung down, forms a continuation thereof, whereby air is not confined around the head of the bedstead.

The invention also consists in the combination, with an upright cabinet or case, of afront portion hinged at its lower edge and adapted to be swung down to form a resting-surface, and having a hinged end portion and a hinged top portion adapted to shut down over the hinged front portion and retain it in place; also, in the combination, with the resting-surface, of hinged legs, and in various details of construction, to be hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawings, Figurelrepresents a perspective view of a bedstead embod yin g our invention when opened ready for use. Fig. 2 represents a front view of the same when folded up and Fig. 3 represents a vertical section, showing the bedstead during the operation of folding with theinattresses stored away.

Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.

A designates an upright cabinet or case, the external form of which is similar to a bureau, and which may have in its lower portion a drawer, B.

The portion A of the front above the drawer may be finished externally to simulate the appearance of drawers, and is hinged at its lower edge, a, so that it may be swung or opened downward and outward into a horizontal position, as seen in Fig. 1.

The cabinet or case has sides which extend from top to bottom thereof, and when the front portion, A, is folded up it fits between and is embraced by said sides, thus supporting the said front portion against any tendency to move laterally, which would strain its hinges.

In the cabinet or case, at the point where the front A is hinged, is a horizontal shelf, 0, and when the front is swung down, as shown in Fig. 1, this shelf forms a continuation thereof and a part of the resting-surface. v

In order not to confine the air around the head of the person occupying the bed, the two sides or portions thereof, A of the cabinet or case A are hinged vertically, and when the bed is occupied may be swung or opened outward, as seen in Fig. 1.

D designates the end portion of the bedstead, which eomprises the lower end portionof the resting-surface and a foot-board. The edge of the portion of the resting-surface comprised in the part D is hinged at b to the portion A, so that when the bedstead is to be used the end portion, D, may be swung or turned down, so as to bring the portion of the resting-surface comprised in it in line with the portion A. hen the bedstead is to be folded up the end portion, D, is swung up into the position shown in Fig. 3, to bring the portion of the resting-surface comprised in the partD into a position at right angles to the front A and the foot-board into a position parallel with said front A.

The lower end of the front portion, A, is supported by hinged legs E, and the hinged end portion, D, is supported by other hinged legs, E, and when the bedstead is folded up the legs E fold up upon the sides or on the end of A, and the legs E fold up upon the footboard, as seen in Fig. 3.

The sides 0 of the front portion are of the same length as said front portion, and c c are continuations thereof, corresponding in length, the first, c, to the width of the shelf 0, and the second, 0 to the length of the portion D of the resting-surface. The continuations c c of the sidesc are hinged thereto, and when itis desired to fold up the bedstead these portions may be folded over upon the main portion (3.

The legs E are hinged to angle-plates or knee-pieces secured upon the sides 0 and projectin g slightly outward therefrom, so that room is afforded for folding the hinged porlions c of the sides upon the main portions 0, and then folding the legs E up upon the hinged side portions, 0

The top of the cabinet or case has a hinged front portion, F, having a downwardly-proj ecting lip or flange, d, which, when the front portion, A, is folded up, projects over the upper end thereof and holds the front portion in place.

If desirable, the sides of the cabinet or case might be divided vertically and one half rigidly attached thereto, while the other half may be attached to the front portion, A, so that it will form part of the sides thereof.

By our invention we provide a bedstead which may be folded into a very small compass. If it is made to represent a bureau when folded, space is still left which may be utilized by arranging a drawer in it.

In order to provide for readily folding the resting-surface, a mattress made in three sections may be used--one section to fit the shelf 0, another section to fit the front portion, A, and a third to fit the hinged end portion, D.

In Fig. 3 we have represented the mattress, made in three parts, as stored away upon the horizontal shelf 0, together with pillows G and bed-clothes H, for which ample room is afforded, and we have also represented the side portions, 0 0 the legs E E, and the end portion, D, as folded, and the whole front A as being folded up into the case. When entirely folded up the lip (1 upon the portion F of the top will shut down over the front A and retain the front in its upright folded position.

Inasmuch as the resting-surface is composed of the shelf 0, the hinged front portion, A, and its hinged end portion, D, it is obvious that it may be folded into a very small compass.

What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'

1. The combination, with an upright cabinet or case having sides which extend from the top to bottom, of a front portion fitting within and embraced between said sides when closed, and hinged at its lower edge, so that it may be swung or opened outward, and a horizontal shelf which is coincident with the front portion when the latter is swung into a horizontal position, and forms therewith a resting-surface, substantially as specified.

2. The combination, with an upright cabinet or case, of a front portion hinged at its lower edge, so that it may be swung downward and outward into a horizontal position to form a portion of the restingsurface, and having the end piece comprising a portion of the restingsurfaee and a foot-board, and hinged so that it may be turned up at right angles to the front portion when it is to be folded up within the case, substantially as specified.

3. The combination, with an upright cabinet or case having vertically-hinged sides, of a front portion adapted to fit between said hinged sides when the latter are closed, and hinged at its lower edge, so that it may be swung downward andoutward, and ahorizontal shelf which is coincident with the front portion when the latter is swung into a horizontal position and forms therewith a resting'surface, substantially as specified.

4. The combination, with an upright cabinet or case, of a front portion hinged at its lower edge, so that it may be swung downward and outward into a horizontal position, and having ahinged end portion and ahinged top portion adapted to shut down over said front portion and retain it in place when not in use, sub stantially as specified.

The combination of the cabinet or case A, the hinged front A, having the hinged end portion, D, and the hinged legs E E, substantially as specified.

6. The combination of the cabinet or case A, the hinged front A, having the hinged end portion, D, and the sides composed of the portion 0 and the hinged portions 0 c substantially as specified.
