RICHARD M. COLLARD, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
PEN AND PENCIL CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,273, dated May 31, 1881.
Application filed February f2, 1881. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RICHARD M. CoLLAnD, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Pen and Pencil Case, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
In most ofthe so-called magic pen and pencil cases the pen cannot be pushed out for use unless the pencil is also out; hence, in using the pen the pencil is apt to become inked and its point or lead therebyinjured.
The object of this invention is to remedy this defect by so constructing the case that the pencil can be attached to or detached from the magic movement77 at the will of the user, so that the pencil-point will not be out while using the pen, though the case be drawn out to its full length. A
My invention consists in the combination of theextension part of my case with the ordinary magic movement, so that either the pen or pencil may be extended out separately. This is done by simply turning the extension part of the case to the right, in order to lock it with the magic movement, so that the pencil moves back and forth with it. By unlocking, through a turn to the left, the extension-case is freeand the pen may be drawn out while the pencil is left within.
Figure l is an enlarged sectional elevation of the improved pen and pencil ease with pencil extended and pen drawn in. Fig. 2 is an enlarged partly-sectional elevation of the improved pen and pencil case with pen extended and pencil drawn in. Fig. 3 is an enlarged partly-sectional elevation ofthe improved pen and extension part thereof closed, and with pen and pencil both drawn in.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The magicmovementA consists of an inmost tube, B, into the lower end of which the pencil C is inserted. Said tube B is provided with a lateral stud, a, and is in turn inserted in a longitudinally-slotted tube, D, so that the stud, a, shall engage in the slot b of the said tube D, and extend through into the spiral slot c of the tube E, that envelops the tube D, and which tube E is provided, near its top, with a lateral stud, d, that engages in the spiral slot fof the tube F, said spiral slot f being formed in a con trary direction from the slot c which incloses said tube E. The tube D is provided with a' fixed collar, g, about its lower end by means of which the movement is attached (soldered) to the lower end of the inclosing-tube H, and on the lower end of the tube F is a collar, h, that holds said movement centrallyin said tube H. The tube H contains (telescoping with it and surrounding the tube F) a tube, G, about whose upper end is acollar, t'. These parts put in a suitable case constitute the movements of the ordinary magic pen and pencil case, and hence require no further description; and in the magic pen and pencil cases now in use the tubes or cases constituting the case or handle of the pencil or pen cannot be drawn out at full length, as required for conveniently using the pen, without the protrusion of the pencil.
My improvement is shown in thecase or tube M provided with a longitudinal slot, m, having a lateral set-off, m', at its upper end, and inclosing the tubes F G; and the improvement is shown further in the stud a inserted laterally in the collar t' of the tube G, which stud uen,- gages in the setoff slot m or moves in the slot m,'as the case may be, said tube M being firmly soldered to the interior of the tube N.
In the magic pen and pencil case in common use the collar rof the tube G is soldered to the top ofthe smaller tube N of the outer telescopic case, so that when the case is shut up or closed the pencil will be drawn in, and when extended the pencil will be thrust out, the engagement of the stud d in the spiral slot oi the tube E permitting these movements.
In this improved case if, when the outer case is closed, the tubes N Mbe turned so that the stud n engages in the set-ott' m', the pencil is thereby disengaged from the magic movement and the outer case may be extended without thrusting the said pencil out but it' the said tubes M N be turned so that the stud n shall enter the slot m, the pencil will thereby be connected with the magic movement, and the extension of the outer case will cause said pencil to be extended.
The large tube 0 of the outer case is soldered at its lower end to the semicircular lug o on the lower end of the tube H, and the tube N telescopes in said tube O in the usual man ner. f
IOS)
The double slide P is secured in the usual Way on the tube O, and moves up and down thereon and carries the pen Q.
On the top of the tube N is xed a cap, R, in which is a ring, T, for suspending the pencil from Watch-guard or chain.
It will be seen that a pen and pencil case of this construction is unusually compact when closed, but when extended atfull length alfords a pen handle of su'teient and convenient length.
Having' thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Paten t- The combination, with a magic movement, A,
having a stud, n, laterally arranged in the eol- 15 RICHARD M. COLLARD,
