UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
CHARLES D. BROIVN AND JEDEDIAH A. PRATT, OF PORTLAND, MAINE.
l I PAPER BOX.
i SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,262, dated May 3l, 1881.
Application led May 13, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
i Be it known that we, CHARLEs D. BROWN and JEDEDIAH A. PRATT, both of Portland, in the State ot' Maine, have invented an lin- 5 provement in Paper Boxes, of which thel following is a specification.
Figure l is a plan view of a blank ready to be folded. Fig. 2 is top view ofthe box made by folding the blank. Fig. 3 is a side elevation.
This invention belongs to that class which pertainsto improvements in paper or similarl boxes for packingand marketing berries,\vhere, a blank having been rst prepared, the box is readily and quickly made by folding the blank according to the lines or grooves indicated, or cut or scored on the blank, and then fastening the corners, ends, or sides.
The present invention consists in the blank made as will be hereinafter described; and, secondly, in the box formed by folding and fastening the said blank, all as will now be more in detail set out and explained.
In the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 denotes a blank cutfrom paperor very thin wood or any suitable substance or material. This has an inwardly-sloping and open slot, x, at the upper left-hand corner in the part e and another at the lower right-hand corner in the part 0'; and near the corners on the sides c c, opposite to these slots, are tongues x, formed by cutting away a small piece out of the edge ofthe material and making a short slot 011 a line continuous with the out. When the blank is folded the part A will form the bottom of the box, the parts B B the ends, and a a the sides, while one of the corner parts, c c', comes on one side of the box and the other on the n opposite side. In forming the latch or joint the one part, c, will a little overlap the other part, c', when the tongues formed at x on the outer corners of o c can readily be engaged With the slots a' in the corners of c c', and
thus these side pieces will be firmly united and held together. The lines on which the several parts are bent in carrying out the above process are all duly cut or scored, so that the bending can be easily done, but also so that the material shall not be harmed for use as a folded box.
The manipulations in folding and securing together in box form a blank thus made are very simple and easily accomplished, while the connection, being made simply by latchin g the end parts together on the two sides, is a very quick matter. This latch-connection is not only easily and quickly made; but since it comes at the sides of the box, where it has also interposed between it and the article in the box a division-wall, and since the latch connects at about the center on the intersection ot' a vertical line and horizontal line across the side ot' the box, it is plain that the parts are united in such a way as to resist in the best degree all strain in using the box.
I am aware that heretofore several patents have beenissued on paper or otherboxes made of single piece ot' flexible material, and make no broad claim on such as my invent-ion. My box dift'ers from each and all of these said patents in the peculiar Way ot making the tongue and slot which forms the latch-conneclion, and in the location of said connection when the box is formed, and in having but a single connection on each side ot the box. In this Way not only is the process of folding very simple and easy to be done, but the conn-ection is very secure.
Having thus described my invention, what I consider new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A fruit-box blank cut or made from a single piece ot" liexible material suitably scored or grooved, and having in the two diagonally-opposite corners c o the inwardly-inclined open slots w a', and in the other diagonally-opposite corners, c c, the tongues e x, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. A fruit-box made of a blank cut or stamped from a single piece of flexible material suitably scored or grooved, and having in the two diagonally-opposite corners c' c the inwardlyinclined open slots w, and in the other diago nally-opposite corners, ce, the tongues a2' x', the sides and ends being folded on the scores, the corner-pieces being lapped and the tongues and slots being engaged, substantially as shown and described.
