UNITED STATES WILLIAM O. HELLER,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF ORRVILLE, OHIO.
ATTACHING HANDLES TO COFFINS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,981, dated May 24, 1881.
Application filed March 10, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM O. HELLER, 0t Orrville, in the county of Wayne and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Connecting-Irons for Attaching Handles to" Burial-Gaskets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in means for attaching handles to cofiins; and it consists in a metallic connection, one end of which is provided with atransverse slot adapted to be attached by means of a screw under or upon the bottom of the casket, and the other end is provided with two slots, which serve for the attachment of the handle, as hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved connection. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the device. Fig. 3 is a view of the end of connecting-iron which is to be attached to the coffin. Fig. 4 is a view showing the manner of attaching the device.
The object of this invention is to supply a want experienced in the manufacture of burialcases composed of iron and glass. In coffins of this description it is preferable to attach the handle by some means upon the under side of bottom; but the position of the handle should be on the side, and it should not touch or bind against the glass, and the method of attachment should be such as to permit its adjustment and to allow of handles of varying lengths to be used.
The letter or represents the lug or part which is placed on the under side of bottom of coffin.
This part has a slot, 11, placed transversely to its width, which receives a screw or bolt that enters the iron bottom. At a right angle, or nearly so, to the part a is the upward-extending part 0, provided near the end with two vertical slots, d, one above the other. Instead of two short slots there may be one long slot. That side of the iron 0 which comes next to the coftin is countersunk contiguous to the slots, as seen at e.
The device is preferably made by casting, and no drilling of holes for the screws is necessary.
Two of these connecting-irons are necessary for each handle, which may be adjusted vertically by means of the slots d, and the irons may be adjusted to or from each other by means of the transverse slot 1), so as to permit of the attachment of handles of any length.
Having described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent A connecting-iron for attaching handles to coflins, consisting of a part provided with one or more vertical slots for the attachment of the handle and a part to be attached to the coffin, extending from the part first mentioned substantially at a right angle and provided with a slot placed transversely to its width, as set forth.
WILLIAM 0. HELLER.
