HILAND vV. GOODWIN, OF MUIR, ASSIGNOR TO F. MILLARD & 00., OF
' PALO, MICHIGAN.
LlFTlNG-JACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,968, dated May 24, 1881. Application filed April 11, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HILAND W. Goonwnv, a citizen of the United States, residing at Muir, in the county of Ionia and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting-Jacks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to improvements in that class of devices known as liftin g-j acks and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the various parts of which it is composed, whereby the lifting of heavy weights can be accomplished without great exertion to the operator, all of which will be hereinafter more fully explained.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved lifting-jack. Fig. 2 represents a side view of the same. Fig. 3 represents a vertical sectionalview. Fig. 4 represents a detail view. Fig. 5 represents a face view. Figs. 6 and 7 represent detail views, and Fig. 8 represents a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
The letter A designates the base of the jack, having secured thereto and arising therefrom two standards, a a, between which is formed a space, M.
B designates a standard, constructed with a projection, b, at the upper portion thereof, and with aslot, b, whichis open at the lower end. Said standard is alsoprovided with a roller, 1), within said slot, and to one side of said projection with a ratchet or teeth, b and a space, I), cut away on each side ofthe space or slot b aforesaid, all of which is for purposes-herein further explained.
O designates a pawl placed within a recess, a, made in the standard a, which is provided with a rod, 0', that passes through said standard, and having its outer end formed into a handle, 0 Said rod is provided. with a spring, 0 that encircles the same and operates upon the pawl C from the rear thereof.
D designates a lever, one end of which forms a handle, d, and the other end is of circular form, as at d, which has projecting on each side thereof pins (1 d that engage with a rack, 01 d formed on the inner face of each of the standards a a.
Having thus given a description of the various parts of which my improved lifting-jack is composed, I will now proceed and explain the manner in which it is operated in raising heavy weights.
Operation: In order to operate my improved jack in raising weights, the handle is to be grasped by the operator and given a downward stroke, which has the efiect of raising the standard B by means of the roller 1) operating upon the periphery of the circular portion 01 of the lever D, until the notch d in said lever passes beneath said roller. At the same time the above described movement takes place the pawl O engages with the ratchet b in the standard B by means of the spring a pressing upon the rear of said pawl, thereby causing said pawl to rest within said ratchet and assist in supporting, with the lever, the weight that may be on the upper end of the standard B. In adjusting said standard B the same slides vertically within a strap, (1 (metal,) that encircles the upper end of the standards a a, and straps (1 01 that are secured to each side of the standards a a, and said standard B is guided also by means of the projection 1), working within the space a between the two standards a a. Should it become necessary to make a second stroke with the lever, in raising the standard B, said lever must be slightly raised until the pins d d enter the recess I), made in the standard, which recess allows the lever to be raised and the pins to fall within the next rack or tooth 01 above the one said pins formerly occupied, thus allowing the lever D to be given the second stroke and raising the standard. At the same time the pawl G enters the ratchet b and retains the standard until relieved by the operation of the lever D.
It will thus be seen by the foregoing description that I construct a lifting-jack that can readily be adjusted to suit different heights in lifting weights, and itis simple in construction, easily operated, and at the same time cheap to manufacture, and it is also durable and light to handle.
Havingdescribed my invention, what I claim 5 as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
In a lifting-jack, the combination of the standard B, provided with the projection 11, roller b and ratchet b, recess b, and slots 1),
10 with the standards a a, having the rack or teeth d d and provided with the pawl G and lever D, the whole operating as shown, described, and for the purposes specified.
In testimony that; I claim the foregoing as my own Ihave hereto affixed my signature in :5 presence of two witnesses.
HILAND W. GOODWIN.
