Application September 14, 1945, Serial No. 616,191
3 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in head shields for use under hair driers and it is among the objects thereof to provide a head shield to be worn under a hair drier which shall be adjustable to the size and contour of the wearers head, brow and neck to assure comfort to the wearer with full protection against the blast on the neck, ears and face of the user. It is another object of the invention to provide a sectional deflection shield for protection against a hair drying blast in which the parts are shaped to coact in a manner to render adjustment simple and to hold the parts securely in their adjusted position.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of a blast deflecting shield which may be constructed of suitable available materials to be of light weight and durable and readily sterilized.
These and other objects of the invention will become more apparent from a consideration of the accompanying drawing, constituting a part hereof, in which like reference characters designate like parts, and in which Fig. 1 is a View in perspective of a blast deflecting shield embodying the principles of this invention;
Fig. 2 a side elevational view, partially broken away, of a portion of one of the coasting shield parts;
Fig. 3 a similar view of a portion of the other of the coacting shield parts; and
Fig. 4 a top plan View of an articulate shield formed by the coaction of the end portions of the cooperating shield parts shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
In the drawing reference numeral I generally designates a. front portion of a deflecting shield and the numeral 2 a rear portion which is joined to the front portion in any suitable manner as by means of lugs, slots and screw clamps, as will be hereinafter explained. The shield members are constructed of a suitable material, such as a plastic of rather substantial thickness, as shown by the edge 3, to permanently maintain a curved shape which, however, is changeable due to the somewhat flexible nature of the structural form of the material. The plastic material, such as Lucite, is premolded to form a brow section 4 which provides a seating surface on the brow of the wearer of substantial contact area, the portion terminating into a visor shield 5 which is of a length and sufliciently flared to assure that the hot air blast coming from the drier above the wearers head is completely deflected without impinging upon the face of the wearer. The visor portion 5 terminates at a place above the ear of the wearer and is provided with rounded ends 6, although this particular shape is unimportant.
The rear section 2 is provided with a neck portion 1 that constitutes a shield for the neck against the impinging blast from the drier, the neck portion being straight to hug the neck, as shown, and, like the visor 5, is of sufficient length and flare to protect the neck and to prevent the blast from passing downwardly on the wearer.
The rear portion 2 terminates in enlarged ends or lugs 8 which cover the ears of the wearer to deflect the blast, and the lugs or ends 8 are rounded as shown at 9.
As shown in Figs. 1 to 3, the rear section 2 is provided with an arcuate slot It) and is further provided with pins or dowels ll which latter coact with the straight slots H of the front section I when assembled, as shown in Fig. 1. Clamping screws l3, having thumb nuts l4, extend through both the straight and arcuate slots l2 and I 0, respectively, and function to clamp the front and rear sections to their adjusted position as effected by the coaction of the pin II in the slots l2 and by the coaction of the arcuate slot [0 with the clamping pin 13.
The parts are assembled by inserting the dowels ll of the rear shield portion through the slots l2 of the front shield portion, which latter overlaps the ends 9 of the rear shield portion. The screw clamps 13 are then inserted with the flat end of the screw on the inner face of the shield and the thumb nuts I4 extending on the outside of the shield. By means of the adjustable slots and screw clamps and the coaction of the dowels with the slot l2, the shield may be adjusted by separating or contracting the same radially and the visor and neck shield portions may be raised or lowered to conform to the shape of the wearer as desired. Once adjusted to the proper position the thumb nuts M are turned to clamping position to securely hold the parts as adjusted.
It is evident from the foregoing description of the invention that a head shield as therein illustrated and described is self-contained and selfsupporting on the wearers head and adjustable to conform to the shape of the head. It is shaped to protect all exposed portions of the face, ears and neck of the wearer against the blast from the drier above the wearers head and it is of relatively light weight and durable construction.
Although one embodiment of the invention has 3 been herein illustrated and described, it is evident to those skilled in the art that modifications may be made in the details of construction without departing from the principles herein set forth.
I claim:
1. A head shield for Wear under a hair drying apparatus which comprises a visor and neck piece preformed to an arcuate and flared shape of a flexible material capable of retaining its contour surface shape while permitting change of size of its arcuate form, the visor portion being provided with a brow engaging area, preshaped to effect contact over a large portion of the brow and flaring downwardly in a forward and side direction, said visor portion terminating at substantially the transverse center of the shield, and said neck portion having a surface contour adapted to engage the neck at substantially the hair line and flaring outwardly, rearwardly and sideways with the ends terminating in large portions for shielding the ears, and means for adjustably connecting the ends of the visor and neck portions whereby they are adjustable radially with respect to the geometrical center of the composite shield and also angularly to adapt their upper peripheries to the head contour of the wearer.
2. A head shield for wear under a hair drying apparatus which comprises a visor and neck piece preformed to an arcuate and flared shape of a flexible material capable of retaining its contour surface shape while permitting change of size of its arcuate form, the visor portion being rovided with a brow engaging area preshaped to effect contact over a large portion of the brow and flaring downwardly in a forward and side direction, said visor portion terminating at substantially the transverse center of the shield, and said neck portion having a surface contour adapted to engage the neck at substantially the hair line and flaring outwardly, rearwardly and sideways with the ends terminating in large portions for shielding the ears, and means for adjustably connecting the ends of the visor and neck portions whereby they are adjustable radially with respect to the geometrical center of the composite shield and also angularly to adapt their upper peripheries to the head contour of the wearer,
.4 said adjusting means comprising a plurality of dowels extending from one of said joined members coacting with a slot in the other of said members, and a clamping pin extending through the said slot and another slot in the other of said members.
3. A head shield fOr wear under a hair drying apparatus which comprises a visor and neck piece preformed to an arcuate and flared shape of a flexible material capable of retaining its contour surface shape while permitting change of size of its arcuate form, the visor portion being provided with a brow engaging area preshaped to effect contact over a large portion of the brow and flaring downwardly in a forward and side direction, said Visor portion terminating at substantially the transverse center of the shield, and said neck portion having a surface contour adapted. to engage the neck at substantially the hair line and flaring outwardly, rearwardly and sideways with the ends terminating in large portions for shielding the ears, and means for adjustably connecting the ends of the visor and neck portions whereby they are adjustable radially with respect to the geometrical center of the composite shield and also angularly to adapt their upper peripheries to the head contour of the wearer, said adjusting means comprising a plurality of dowels extending from one of said joined members coacting with a straight slot of the other of said members, and a clamping pin extending through said straight slot and a curved slot in the other of said members.
