Description

Patented Apr. 15, 1947 UNITED STATES PATENT oEl-icE GARBAGE RECEPTACLE AND LADDER Teddy, R. Pope, Sr., Memphis, Tenn. v
Application FebruaryI 16, 1946, Serial No. 648,103
2 Claims. 1
This invention relates to a combination gar-v bage receptacle, seat and ladder, and has especial relation to a compact device or kitchen use which combines the functions'of a receptacle for garbage, a seat and a stepladder.
Modern kitchens are so restricted in space that it is of the utmost importance that this space be utilized to its fullest extent.
In many cases the space is so limited that there is little room for a stool, chair, or other seating facilities, and almost certainly in addition to a garbage can, no room for a stepladder which is needed for access to shelves not directly accessible to a person standing` 'on the fioor.Y
The objects of the present invention are:
To provide in a single device a receptacle for garbage, a seat and a ladder which will accomplish in a single article all these functions.
The means by which the foregoing and other objects are accomplished, and the manner of their accomplishment, will readily be understood from the following speciflcationiupon reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a sectional front elevation.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation; and
Fig. 3 a plan view.
Referring now to the drawings in which the various parts are indicated by numerals:
I I is a casing, preferably of cylindrical cross section open at the topto which upright wall members or flanges I3 are integrally secured, as
by welding, these wall members being spaced apart and carrying transversely disposed members I5 adapted to serve as the rungs of a ladder. The bottom of the casing Il is closed by a. base Il having Va laterally extending portion I'IA which underlies and stabilizes the ladder walls I3.
I9 is a foot rail encircling the casing II from one ladder wall to the other thereof, this rail being supported by brackets 2| secured to and flaring outward from the casing.
23 is an open top garbage pail adapted to be disposed within the casing I I, the pail preferably having a bail 25. Adjacent the top of the casing is an annular flange 21 for centering the garbage pail. 29 are ears forming handles for the casing.
3| is a flanged top or lid adapted to tightly' close the casing and overlie the garbage pail 23 disposed therein. Preferably this lid has a gasket 33, here shown as of disc form, but which might be annular, adapted to seat on the top edge of the casing and form a seal therewith, and
to silence and cushion the top in closing. is a pad overlying the lid 3| and forming a seat.
At one side the lid has a rigidly secured bracket 31, preferably an integral extension having downwardly turned ear portions 3 9 which lie between the ladder walls I3 and are pivoted thereto by a pin 4I to form a hinge for the lid. The extension 3l continues beyond the pin 4I and is v apertured for engagement by a link 43 through which connection is made to a foot actuatable lever 45. The leve'r 45 is hingedly engaged with one of the side-walls I3 and oppositely projects through a slot 41 to the other wall and therebeyond has a treadle portion 45A through which it may be actuated by the foot.
I claim:
1. A kitchen garbage-receptacle which in-y pin extending through said flanges and said ears pivotally hinging said lid to said casing, a. foot treadle hingedly supported by one of said flanges and slidabl-y extending through the other thereof, and a link operatively connecting said lid bracket with said treadle.
2. A kitchen garbage receptacle which includes an open top casing, and an open top receptacle removably disposed therein, said casing having an overlying lid including a pad adapted to form a seat, and an integrally secured base underlying and projecting laterally from one side thereof,
and vertically disposed flanges spaced apart and of substantially equal height with said casing integrally secured to said casing and base and extending outward from said vcasing and upward from said base extension, ladder steps disposed outward from said casing extending between and bracing the outer edges of said anges and secured rigidly thereto, said lid having a bracket portion extending between and housed by said flanges, said bracket portion having downwardly turned ears, a pin extending through said flanges and said ears, pivotally hinging said lid to said casing, a foot treadle hingedly supported at one end by one of said flanges and extending slidably throughthe other thereof, and a link housed between said fianges, connecting said lid bracket radially outward from said pin, with said tradle- TEDDY R.
