Description

0 A.,J. LOGKIE.
Pad for Horses Hoofs.
'No. 241,870. Patented May 24, I881.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW J. LOOKIE, OF ROCHESTER, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO THOMAS H. TITUS, OF SAME PLACE.
PAD FOR HORSES HOOFS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,870, dated May 24, 1881.
Application filed December 23, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANnREw J. LOCKIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Olmsted and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pads for Horses Hoofs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the IO art to which it appertain's to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of refer- 'ence marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention is an improvement on the patent previously granted to A. J. Lockie, the present applicant, on the 1st of June, 1880, and numbered 228,262.
It consists in providing the throat of the pocket-sheet with a dirt-excluding strip; also, in adapting the latter to serve as a strengthening and packingconfining device; and, finally, in the construction and combination of the various parts hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawin gs,Figure1represents a perspective view of ahorses hoof and shoe with my pad applied thereto. Fig. 2 represents in detaila view of the inner side of the pocket-sheet provided with one form of my presentimprovement. Fig.3 represents asimilar view of a pocket-sheet and horseshoe havin'g another form of said improvement applied thereto. Fig. 4: represents a view of aleather blank provided with my dust-excluding strip and adapted to beformed into a pocket-sheet, and Fig. 5 represents a vertical section..
A designates a horseshoe having lugs to a B, apocket-sheet having a pear-shaped pocket, 'B O, a pad* of sponge, which fits into and'fills said pocket'yl), a stifi'ening-piec'e, and E a' metallic brace, all substantially as described in said prior patent.
The stiffener D may, of course, be applied on either side of" sheet B; but it has been shown, for convenience, on the underside thereof. The brace E is serviceable, but not indispensable.
These pads, as heretofore made and applied,
(No model.)
have been found subject to one serious defeet-namely, the admission of dust, dirt, and
any other suitable material, which is attached either to pocket-sheet B alone, as shown in Fig. 2, or to lugs to a of shoe A, as shown in Fig. 3, by means of rivets or other fastenings, that pass through said pad-sh eet and stiffening piece D. In the latter case the length of the strip F is necessarily increased, and it is preferably of rigid metal. When'attached to the pocketsheet alone, the strip F need not be longer than the width of neck I). In either case the said strip closes the opening of said neck, and thereby prevents the entry of dirt or other foreign matter to the interior of the pad. It also acts as an additional stiffener, and insures the retention of the packing within its pocket. The bracing action is particularly efl icacious when the piece F is made of rigid material and attached to lugs a a, as stated. It then strengthens the shoe as well as the pad.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In combination with a flexible pad-sheet having a packing-pocket formed therein, a strap or plate secured to said sheet on the upper or inner face thereof, and serving to retain the packingwithin said pocket, to brace the said pad, and to exclude dirt, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination with pad sheet B, having a packing-pocket, the stiffening-piece D on the bottom of said pad-sheet, and the strip or plate F on the upper or inner side thereof, said strip or plate serving to exclude dirt, to retain the packing, and to brace the pad-sheet. o
3. In combination with the shoe A, having on its inner edges or sides the perforated lugs a a, the pad-sheet B, formed with a pocket to receive packing, and the strip or plate F, arranged across the mouth of said pocket on 5 the inner side of said sheet, said sheet and strip both being secured to said lugs by the same fastenings.
4. In combination with shoe A, havinglugs In testimony whereof I aflix my signature a a, the pad B, having pocket B, for the rein presence of two Witnesses. ception of making, the stiffening-piece D on I the under side of said pad-sheet, and the strip ANDREW LOOKID' 5 F on the upper orinner side of said pad-sheet, Witnesses said parts B D F being secured to said lugs T. H. MCOONNELL, by the same fastenings. CHAS. N. CHADBOURN.
