The invention relates to a fibre container, and particularly to a'fibre container provided with a metal part with which the container closure or other means may cooperate for securing the closure to the container.
An object of the invention is to provide a fibre container which will have all of the effectiveness and adaptability of a metal container for. closure application, attachment and sealing.
Another object of the invention is to provide a fibre container having a closure anchoring part which is located entirely on the exterior of the container, and may be eflectively secured to the walls of the container without the useof fastening means piercing the fibre.
vide a fibre container having a metal closureanchoring part provided therein,- in-which said The invention possesses other objects and features of advantage some of-which, with the foregoing, will be set forth in the following description of the preferred form of the invention which is illustrated in the drawings accompanying and forming part of the specification; It is to be understood, however, that variations in the showing made by the said drawings and description may be adopted within the scope of the invention as set forthin the claims.
Referring to said drawings:
Figure l is a fragmentary side view of a container constructed in accordance with the-present invention, portions being removed to disclose hidden parts.
Figure 2 is a full longitudinal sectional view of the container as shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary detail of a portion of the container shown in Figure 2. Figures 4 and 5 are views similar to Figure 3 but showing somewhat modified arrangements. In the embodiment of the invention hereillustrated, the container is formed with cylindrical side walls 6 preferably made up of laminations I of fibre or the like. At an end of the walls is provided an opening I arranged to be covered by a closure 9 which, as shown in Figures 2 and 3, is made up of laminatlons I! of material 55 Foriastening or looking the closure 0 in opersimilar to the laminations 1. The cover in i formed with an inset body portion II and an annular skirt M which extends from the edge of'the body I! and is arranged to engage the '5 portion it of the inner side of the walls I, it
being thus noted that since the portion II is a part of the fibre wall of the container, a more or less yielding seat for the closure will be provided.
10 To form'a means on the walls of th container l5 embraces the container on the exterior side of A further object of the invention is to prothe walls 6 adjacent the opening. The outer longitudinal portion of the band I1 is extended first radially outwardly thence longitudinally inwardly and thence radially inwardly to form a 'm curl or roll ll lying radially outwardly 01 what may be termed the bodyportion it Desirably the outward longitudinal part II of the seat It is fiared radially outwardly corresponding to the adjacent portion or the band, and is gradually 2! reduced in section so. that said part 2i will curve over and mergeinto the curl it. This construction provides a smooth, protected, and reinforced rim for the container at the opening. and at the same time facilitates the ready and proper insertion of the closure in its seat. It
desired, the longitudinally outer part I! of the skirt may be flared and tapered in correspondence with the part 2| of the-container walls, and is preferably extended so as to fit well over said Part ii. v
For securing the band on the walls against longitudinal displacement in opposite directions, there is rolled or otherwise depressedinto the side of the walls I, an inwardly offset portion It completely around the container, and pref- 'erably such oifset is fitted or extruded into a roove 24' provided in the outerside of the walls and desirably formed therein simultaneously with 4 the oifset II. As an additional means of fasten- 4s ingthe band and 'container together, a film of water -proof 'glue is interposed between the D- posing surfaces of the band and containerthrwghout the-entire area or engagement. It may be noted that the lip or part II also assists to in locking the band in position, and preferably the longitudinally inner edge 28 is crimped inwardly into the wall stock as a further attachment for the band and to present a smooth surface at the luncture of such edge and the walls.
body 01. the band, Desirably the portionljfl, of. the ring and a' part of the contiguous portion araaiaara ranged toengage the curl, is slitted so as to provide a plurality of tongues 29 and thus permit the more ready application of the ring over the closure and container parts and the removal of the ring from engagement therewith.
If de t e c n ln r' f my in e n flared portion corresponding to and embracing the flared Portionof said wall, said band being he used with a metal closure-3i such as shown jacent said end and having an annular outer portion forming a curl positioned radially outwardly from said walls and adjacent said open end, a closure fitting within said seat and having a portion extending therefrom and overlying but not encircling said curl, and means independent of said closure and band securing said closure to the curl. 1
'2. A container having fibre side walls and an opening at an end with the adjacent end por- '"tions of the walls flared outwardly thereat, a
in Figure 4, in place of the fibre closureillus trated in Figures 1 to 3. The ,same type, of,
clamping ring'Z'I may be utilized with such metal thence radially inwardly to said body, said flared closure, or if preferred, the ring may bein corporated as at 32 as an integral part of the metal closure 33 shown inFigure 5. a 1 1 "It will now beclear that mall or theembodi merits illustrated, .the" cooperatingmembers lfor fastening and: anchoringv the closure in" position v on the container, are-formed or material such as metal, whereas with respect to the parts which provide for the engagement oi. the closureand the container, at least one ot'tsuch partsisformed of a relatively yielding material such as fibre.
Inthis'manner a fastening arrangement of maximum strength and resistance willbe had, and atthe same time an eflectiveyengagement and seal] the container-.1}
will be afforded between the closure and con-' tainer without theaddition of any separate gasket oryother sealing aid. It wlllalso' benoted that with the closure anchoring 'arrangementof myv invention, no part Dfxth metal: on the container isexposed to the interior of thecontainer, smooth pouring fromthe container is permittedi'and none of the contents may leakyback into the container through the Jointsbetween the'attachedparts.
