Description

' 60 ing a metal-sheathed Patented Jan. 29, 1929.
UNITED STATES PATENT oFF cE.
,nnwm r. nor-Bear,
POBATIOH, OF OWEN, WISCONSIN, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
oon'rarnnn.
Application filed larch 14, 1927, Serial No. 175,259.
The invention relates to containers and more, particularly to a reinforced fibre or pa r container.
he object of the invention is to provide w an end closure for the container wherein the mouth thereof is provided with a beaded or rounded edge by the association of the siding of the container with a metal band and the removable cover is provided with a metal band having a flanged ortion extending over the mouth and ben able beneath the rounded edge either entirel around the container or at spaced interva s.
The invention further consists in the several features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is an elevation view of a containerembodying theinvention,
parts being broken away and parts being 1t shown in section;
Fig. 2 is a top view of the container; Fig. 3 is'an enlarged detail sectional view through a container embodying the invention, with the cover in position for attachment; v I Fig. -is a view similar to Fig. 3 with the cover aflixed to the body;
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing so a modified-form of cover in position for attachment; y 0 Fig. 6 is a view similar toFig. 5 with this cover in afiixed position.
The sidin orbodv 7 of the container is as composed of fibre tu ing, usually made up of a number of wrappings of a r or fibre sheets into a cylindrical or comca form. For forming a reinforcement and a rounded or beaded cover-attaching portion '40 at the mouth of the container, a stri of sheet metal, preferably sheet steel, is re ed into a band 8 and afiixed to the upper ed e of the siding of they container by pressing e mner edge ,9 of the band into the .wall of the con- 46 tainer and bending the upper portion 10 of the conthe band over the upper edge of tainer and forcing the outer ed e 11 of this bead or curvediportion .12 of t engagement wi the siding, thereby formmouth having a coverattaching bead.
The head or cover structure comprises a fibre disk 13 and ametal sheathing or band 14 preferably thin sheet or other bottom e 0 band into suitable sheet metal,'is, designed to clampinglyreceive said-disk.
OF OWEN, WISCOIl'SIN, ASSIGNOB TO THE MASTER PACKAGE OOR- The band 14, in each instance, has a foldedtogether ortion intermediate. its top and ges forming a flange 15 upon which the ottom of the head seats and its upper edge 16 is bent over into clamping engagement with the head whereby the head,
ad acent its outer edge, is firmly held or clamped within the recess thus formed, the
'strip forming the band being bent around the head with its ends secured together in any suitable manner, the bending of the top edge preferabl being done when the head 1s in position wit in the band. The lower portion 17 of the band depends from the flange 15 and may be plain as shown in Figs. 1 3 and 4,-or its lower edge 18 ma be beaded as shown in Fig. 5, to stiflen an strengthen The depending portion 17 of the band is preferably of a diameter to make a good fit over the metal-faced mouth of the ail, as shown in Figs. 3and 4, and in ap lied position the flange 15 abuts against 51o metal band8. a
With the cover applied as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the same is aflixedto the pail body by bending portions 19 of the flange or de- I pending rtion 17 inwardly around the beaded edge 12 of the band 8, thus forming a metal-to-metal interlocking connection be tween the "cover and the pail .body. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2' the'flange 17 is crimped intervals but if desired the whole flange may be so treated. -.In either-case the :cover is securel locked to the body and tampering with t e contentsof the container cannot be effected without detection since a prying out of the flange 17 from its locked position and an attempt to bend these pried out parts back will be. noticed and'the bending of'the flanges cannot be done; with ordinary tools.
It will be noted that the flange 15 rests on the upper part of the band 8 when the cover is attached and thatthis construction provides wear-resisting surfaces and insures a good seal. Furthermore, the upwardly projecting or arched portion 20 of t e cover bandvassists the attaching tools in securing'a or bent over the head 12 at spaced firm grip on the coyer, during the coverv aflixing operation.
, Idesire it to be understood thatthis in v lar f said container having a lower part of said bead to be limited to any particuorm or arrangement, of parts except in so far as such limitations are included in the claims. 7 What I claim as my invention is:
K 1. In a container, the combination with the siding, of a metal band for the mouth of portion extending around the inner wall of the siding. adjacent its edge and around said edge into crimped engagement with the outer side of said -siding to form a head-attaching bead and having its inner edge in embedded engagement with the inner-side of said siding, a removable cover including a reinforcing and head-attaching band fitting over said first-named band and bendable over the to a head-aflixing .position and having a folded intermediate portion forming an inwardly extendin flange adjacent its upper edge adapted to abut against the top of said first-named band, and a head member seating on said flange and clamped thereto by the upper edge ofsaid head-attaching band pressed into contact therewith.
. 2. In a container, the combination with the sidin of a metal band for the mouth of the container having a portion extending around the 'er wall of the siding adjacent its edge and around said edge into crimped engagement with the outer side of vention is not said siding to form a head-attaching bead and having its gagement with the inner side of said siding, a removable cover including a fibre head and a metal band having spaced .portions between which the outer edge of the head is clamped and provided with a depending portion having parts bent into interlocking engagement with said head-attaching bead. 3. In a container, the combination with the fibre siding, of a metal band secured to the mouth thereof and having an external annular head-attaching bead, a removable cover having a fibre head and a band clamped thereto and provided with a depending portion fitting over said mouth and engageable with said bead in a headaflixing position.
4. In a container, the combination with the g siding, of a metal band for the mouth of the portion extending container having a around the inner wall of the siding adjacent its eldge and around said edge into crimped engagement with said siding, a removable coyer including a fibre head and a metal band having spaced portions between which the outer edge of the head is clamped, said coverbandalso having a depending flange having interlocking engagement with said metal mouth band.
