Application October 12, 1944, Serial No. 558,327
rIhis invention relates to brackets, and more particularly to a retractable bracket adapted to be attached to the underneath side of a table, kitchen cabinet or the like, and to which a utility device, such as a grinder for meats and vegetables, may be attached.
Heretofore it has been customary to attach a grinder directly to a table top or top of a cabinet when it is desired to use such a device. Often times, however, it is diicult to attach the device to the table and particularly to cabinets, for the reason that the top of such cabinet will not eX- tend over the side far enough to allow attachment of the device thereto. Another diiculty encountered is that attachment of the device to the top of a table or a cabinet results in serious marring and damage to the table top.
The principal objects of the present inven- Claims. (C1. 248-298) 2 under side of a table or cabinet top 2 preferably by a bolt or the like 3.
I provide an elongated sleeve ll preferably made of sheet metal material having transversely turned side edges and forming flanges 5 and 5 thereon. The sleeve is tapered inwardly as indicated at 1 for a purpose later described, and is provided with an opening in the inner end thereof for receiving the bolt 3 and which is held thereon by a nut 8 engaging screw threads 9 on said bolt.
The outer end of the sleeve i is turned transversely to form a flange It) adapted to engage against and be attached to the side wall II of tion are 4to provide a device which may ce atv tached to the under side of a table or cabinet top and be withdrawn for attachment of a grinder or other device thereto; to provide a device which may be retracted under the table .top out of the way when not in use; to provide a device having an extensible body member, the outer end of which may be removed and placed on top of the body member to provide a thickened portion for attachment of a grinder thereto; to provide for rigid attachment of the device to the under side of the table or cabinet top; to provide a device which will be rigid when withdrawn and in extended position ready for use; and to provide a simple, economical and efficient device capable of operation as and for the purpose described.
In accomplishing these and other objects of the invention I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred form of which is disclosed in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. l is a perspective view of the body member of my device in extended position showing the extension about to be removed therefrom.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the body member showing the extended end in useable position and a grinder attached thereto.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal, cross-sectional View of my device showing its attachment to the under side of a cabinet or table top.
Fig, e is a bottom plan view of the device partly in cross section showing the stop member.
Fig. 5 is a transverse, cross-sectional view taken on line 5 5., Fig. 4.
Referring more in detail to the drawing:
I designates a bracket embodying the features of my invention adapted to be attached to the the table or cabinet by screws I2. I also preferably provide a bushing I3 adapted to engage on the bolt 3 to hold the sleeve 4 rigid and eX- tended from the table top.
Adapted to engage between the sleeve fi and the table top I preferably provide a body member I4, preferably of wood or other suitable material, and adapted to be extended through an opening I5 in the side of said table or the like.
Rigidly attached to the under side of the body Ill by screws or the like I is a guide Il preferably made of sheet metal or the like. The guide is elongated and tapered slightly toward the inner end of said device as indicated at I8, Fig. 4. The outer edges I9 and 2Q of the guide are turned downwardly and inwardly to form channels 2i and 22 in said guide adapted to receive and provide a trackway for the flanges 5 and 6 on said sleeve. I also preferably provide a bolt 'or the like 23 for attaching the guide I'I to the end of the body I4. One end of the bolt is screwthreaded and adapted to receive a nut 2t. The sleeve is provided with an elongated slot '25 adapted to engage the nut 24 extending through the guide I'I and the body member It. I also preierably provide a bushing 25 between the nut 24 and the guide Il so that the nut will engage in the elongated slot 25 to provide proper aligning and rigidity to the sleeve.
By reference to Fig. 3 it will be noted that the body member III in its retracted position extends to adjacent the bushing I3 and may abut thereagainst if desired. It will also be noted that the base of the body I4 to which `the guide Il is attached has an offset portion 2'! against which the end 23 of said guide abuts. The body also has an oiset portion 29 against which the ends of the transversely turned flanges 5 and E on the sleeve 4 abut to provide stop members and smooth conformity of the sleeve to the body I4.
I also preferably provide a stop member Se on the body I4 so that it may be held in a partly extended position if desired. The stop consists of an elongated strip preferably made of sheet metal, having a transversely turned end forming a ange 3| against which the inner end of the 5 body member I4 may abut. The stop member is pivotally attached to the sleeve 4 by a bolt or rivet 32 and is in alignment with the bolt 3 and substantially close to the bushing I3 on said bolt as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. When the stop is not in l0' use it will be in the position asushown in Fig. 4. When desired for use the body is extended outwardly and the stop turned around in longitudinal alignment with the sleeve so that the flanged end will abut against said body member.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, it will be noted that I provide an extension 33 on the end of the body I4 which may be disengaged from said end and used for adding thickness to said body member for convenience in attaching a grinder or other 2o device thereto as shown in Fig. 2. I preferably provide two U-shaped members 34 and 35 .attached to the abutting ends of the body member and the extension by screws 3S and 3l as shown in Fig. 3, so that the U-shaped members may be v hooked one within the other as indicated at 33, Fig. 1. I also preferably provide openings 39 and 40 in the U-shaped members as shown in Fig. 2 through which a tool, such as a screw driver or the like may be inserted to engage the screws :i3Y 30 and 3l for applying them to the body and extension. I also preferably provide a recess di in the under side of the extension 33 to provide a finger-hold to aid in grasping said extension for extending the body member from its retracted;V k35 position.
I also preferably provide openings 42 and 43 in the body portion of the sleeve 4 arranged so that they register with the screws I6 which attach the guide Il to the body member I4 so that a tool, 40 such as a screw driver may be inserted through said opening to attach the screws to said body for attaching the guide to the body after the sleeve is in position.
Operation of a device constructedV and as-Is sembled as described is as follows:
After the device has been attached to the under side of a table top as shown in Fig. 3, it will be in retracted position so that the outer end extension on the body member is slightly inwardly from the edge of the table top. When it is desired to extend the device for use the extension is grasped by the hand as indicated in Fig. 1. Outward pull on the body member will cause the guide I'I to slide in the sleeve ll until the body is extended. outwardly to the desired position. The sleeve and guide both being tapered, outward extension of the device will cause the anges 5 and 5 on the sleeve to engage in the channels 2l and 22 of the guide and cause a tight t thereof to lend rigidity.. to the device. The grinder or article may thenl be attached directly to the end 44 of the eXtension on the body member or, if desired, the end 44 may be disengaged from the body member I and placed on top thereof as shown in Fig. 2, andg the grinder attached thereto.
After the device has served its purpose in its extended position the body member may then lne-returned to its retracted position by engaging the extension 33 on the end 41% of the body member Ill throughqo connection of the U-shaped members 3d and 35 and the body pushed inwardly to an out of way position.
While I have hereinabove described my device as attached tothe under side of a table or cabinet top with the body member I4 adjacent to the under side of the table top, if desired, it may be reversed and the sleeve 4 attached to the under side of the table top. For this form of attachment I provide an opening 45 in the body member for insertion of a tool therethrough to attach said sleeve to said table top by a bolt or the like (not shown). I also provide an opening 46 in the sleeve 4 registering with the opening l5 in the body. I also preferably provide openings 41 and i8 in said sleeve adapted to receive screws or the like to fasten the sleeve to the table top. If desired, openings (not shown) in the body for registering with the openings 4l and 48 may be provided for insertion of a tool therethrough to engage the screws.
It will be obvious that other changes may be made in attaching my invention to a table top without departing from the spirit of the invention.
It will be obvious from the foregoing that I have provided improved details of structure which may be easily and quickly applied to a table top simple, economical and efficient in operation as and for the purpose set forth.
