G. W. GLAZIER. Portable Pipe Vise and Gutter No.24L534.
Patented May 17, I881.
venient for the work.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. GLAZIER, OF SALEM, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JAMES RODIE, OF PEABODY, MASSACHUSETTS.
PORTABLE PIPE VISE AND CUTTER.
SI ECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,534, dated May 17, 1881.
Application filed April 8, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. GLAZIER,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, in the county ot'EsseX and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Pipe Vises and Gutters; and I do hereby declare that the same are fully described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawlugs.
This invention relates to improvements in portable pipe-Vises; and it consists of a pipe vise and cutter combined, it being carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, on which Figure 1 represents a plan view. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section on the line A B, shown in Fig. 1. Fig.3 represents across-section on the line C D, shown in Fig. 2.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the diiferent parts of the drawings.
a represents the lower jaw of the vise, provided with bolt-holes b b b b, by means of which and suitable screws or bolts it can be secured to a bench or other object in a horizontal or vertical position, as may be most con- At the rear of the stationary jaw a it is provided with ears a a, which are hinged by means of the hinge-pin c to the ears d d of the movable jaw d, as shown.
6 is a coiled spring arranged between the jaws to d, to automatically keep them in an expanded position, as shown.
f is a screw-threaded bolt, having its head f resting looselyin a suitable recess, a, in the lower jaw, a, as shown, and having its upper screw-threaded end projecting up through a perforation, d, in the movable jaw 01, as shown.
g is a nut fitting around the screw-threaded part of the screw-bolt f, and h isa handle to turn the nut g with, as usual.
a a are serrated grooves on the inside of the stationary jaw a, and d d are similar and correspondingly-serrated grooves on the inside of the movable jaw d, between which the desired pipe can be held for the purpose of cutting a thread thereon, or for other purposes, as may be desired. For holding small pipes in position, on which it may be necessary to out a thread close up to the place where they are held in the vise, 1 provide the jaws to and d with serrated grooves a and d at rightan gles to the grooves 01/ and d, as shown in Fig. 2, and also in dotted lines in Fig. l.
The pipe-cutter is carried out as follows: A V-shaped groove or pipe-rest, i, is made on the inside of the stationary jaw a, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, in which the pipe is that is being out is laid, as shown.
I is a loosely-journaled circular cutter, arranged upon the pin I, inserted through the lugs or bearings l l on theinside of the movablejaw (1, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
In using the "ise as a pipe-cutter, it is only necessary to lay the pipe in its proper position in the V-shaped groove 2', as shown, and to screw down the movable jaw d until the cutter-wheel l is brought in contact with the pipe, which is then turned round, and as the cutter l makes an incisionaround the pipe the movable jaw dis gradually screwed down until the pipe is out through.
The tool, as hereinabove described, is. a very convenient one for pipe-fitters and others, as it-is both a pipe-vise and pipe-cutter in one and the same tool. It is light and portable,
5 and can easily be secured in any desired or convenient position.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent, and claim The herein-described combined pipe vise and cutter, consisting of the serrated jaws a, and cl,
hinged at c, and provided with the pipe-rest i and loosely-journaled cutter-wheel l, the screw f, not and handleg h, and spring e, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE W. GLAZIER.
Witnesses ALBAN ANDREN, E. E. TORREY.
