Thisinvention relates to mens outer garments and more particularly to a shirt-jacket combination which serves as a shirt yet impartsthe appearance. and finish of a jacket, thus dispensing with the necessity for a separate coat or outer jacket. Its use may be extended to womens shirt-jacket garments adapted to be worn with ztrousersor-slacks... j 5 '1 The principal object of the invention is toiprovide a garment with a shirt-tail construction, thereby affording the advantages of a tucked-in shirt, in combination with a waist formation to give the finish of an outer jacket.

A feature of the invention resides in the provision of a three layer construction (1) an under layer serving as a shirt-tail to give a tucked in characteristic to the garment (2) an intermediate means for preventing the garment from riding up and retaining it adjusted with respect to the trousers of a wearer and (3) an outer finished formation to give a jacket effect to the garment.

Other features making for simplicity of design, ease and economy of manufacture, and preserving the advantageous features of both a shirt and a jacket will be more apparent from the following description of one form of the invention to be read together with the accompanying drawings in which:

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the garment as it appears on a wearer, including a waist coat formation in combination with a shirt to give the comfort of a shirt with the more formal appearance of a coat assembly.

Fig. 2 is a detail front view showing the three layer construction at and below the waist line of the garment, with the outer layer or finished appearance formation turned up;

Fig. 3 is a rear view, in perspective, showing the three layer construction, with the outer layer turned up; and

Fig. 4 is a fragmentary detail view, at the waist line of the garment showing the three layer construction both in front and at the back of the garment.

Considering the drawings, similar designations referring to similar parts, numeral 5 refers generally to a. shirt-jacket garment having a front portion 6 and a rear portion 1. A collar 8 of any desired design may be provided to give an open front appearance as is often found in sport shirts, or a more formal collar formation may be employed, depending on the use for which the garment is intended.

The front portion may be designed to give a double breasted appearance to the garment as 1 Claim. (Cl. 2 11 7) shown in Fig. l, or it may be cut to provide a single breasted structure as indicated in Fig.2.

The shirt tail opens and overlaps as do the interconnecting sections making up the front portion 6.

Stitched to the garment, substantially at the waist line, and downwardly overlapping portion 9 are a plurality of fastening tabs ID as shown in Fig. 2. Said tabs may be made of the same material as the body of the garment, or they may be any desired fastening links designed to connect with buttons or other cooperating fastening means on the trousers of a wearer. the front tabs I0, is a rear tab ll, aflixed to the garment substantially at the waist line at the back of the garment and is also designed to connect with buttons or other suitable fastening means on the rear waist portion of the trousers of a wearer. While a single wide rear tab H is shown, it will be understood that two or more such tabs or equivalent fastening and supporting links may be provided. Also, while the tabs are shown with button holes l2 arranged to connect with buttons at the waist line of the trousers of a wearer of the garment, applicant may use hooks or other suitable interconnecting fastening means.

superposed on and covering the tabs is an outer layer or finished appearance portion l3. This may be of the same material as portions 6 and 1, or may be of different material and appearance. It may be relatively narrow to provide a belt formation appearance or may be wider than an ordinary belt to provide a heavier base or bottom formation normally associated with jacket designs.

The portion I3 is shown turned up in Figs. 2 and 3 to indicate that the tabs I0 and II are positioned beneath it, and normally covered by it when the garment is positioned about the body of a wearer. The detailed arrangement of shirt tail portion 9, tucked into the trousers of a wearer, with tabs 10 and l l to fasten the garment to the trousers, and finished appearance'portion superimposed over the tabs is shown in Fig. 4.

As shown in Fig. 1, the garment when worn gives the tucked in advantages of a shirt with no danger of riding up because of the connec- Similar to tion of the tabs to the trousers as at points M of Fig. 1; and the waist formation or outer layer l3 gives the finished appearance of a jacket by providing a lower formation which covers the waist, of the trousers and yet matches any single or double breasted arrangement for which the front is normally designed.

As a result, the comfort of a shirt, the security of fixed position to assure no displacement in the rear and hence preserve a desired rear appearance; and the finished look of a jacket formation are all combined in one, simple, attractive garment suitable for summer wear, but capable of adaptation to a multiplicity of garment uses bot informal and semi-formal.

It will be obvious that various changes may he made without departing from the spirit of the invention and therefore the invention is not limited to what is shown in the drawings and described in the specification but only as indicated in the appendedvclaim.

I claim:

A combination shirt-jacket garment adapted to present the appearance of a double-breasted jacket which comprises a body portion having overlapping edges, members integral with said body portion adapted .to fit within the trousers of a wearer, extensions on the body portion attached substantially at the waist line thereof adapted to project outside or the trousers of a member.
