COMBINED HAND ANDSTAND MIRROR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,512, dated May 1'7, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERIO W. BITTER, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Hand and Stand Mirrors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

1n the drawings, Figure I is an elevation of a mirror embodying my invention, the parts being arranged for use as a hand-glass. II is a perspective view of the same, the parts being arranged as when in use for a standglass.

Likeletters refer to like parts wherever they occur.

The object of the present invention is twofold-first, toobtain a ready and cheap means of applying handles to mirrors 5 and, secondly, to attach the handle in such manner that the mirror may be used either as a table or stand mirror, or asa hand-mirror, at the will of the user. The construction devised by me is equally applicable to picture-frames, passe-partouts, and like articles, which it is at times desirable to suspend and at other times to stand upon a table or equivalent surface. Therefore, without other special reference to such use, except to say that the form or shape of the partswill of course be adapted to the object in view, which form will readily suggest itself to any intelligent person, I include within the scope of .my invention all such use or application.

To the above endsmy invention consists in combining with a mirror or like frame a springhandle pivoted thereon, so that the same may be caused to clasp the frame in the plane of its surface or in line therewith, and bethus employed as a handle or as a suspension-link, or may be set at any desired angle thereto, and become a foot or rest for the support of the frame, at the will of the user.

I will now proceed to specifically describe my invention, so that others may apply the same.

In the drawings, a indicates aframe, which is shown as oval, but may be square or of any desired form, said frame to contain a glass or picture, as the case may be. This frame is drilled, as at b, to receive the pintles or pivotpoints of the handle, though other means of pivoting the handle may be employed, if preferred, and is preferably grooved, as at c, to retain the handle or rest when the same is in line with the frame. (See Fig. I.)

which has spring enough for the purpose, said handle bent, as at e, to conform to the outline of the frame a, and provided with pivotal points j", which engage with the frame a. Any equivalent means of hinging one part upon the other may be adopted. The lower end of thishandle (I should be bent in a manner equivalent to what is shown at g, in order to brace the frame when used in the'position shown in Fig. II.

Where wire or like material is used there will be sufficient spring to permit the parts 6 to free themselves from groove 0, and in order to retain the parts in position securely a slide, h, or its equivalent, is used, a slight taper being given to the handle at 'i.

For purposes of cheapness and finish,1prefer to make the frame a of metal, and to use for the handle (Z wire bent to the proper shape; but as material forms no,part of the present invention, it may be varied at the will of the maker.

The construction of the device being substantially as specified, when it is desirable to use the article as a hand-mirror (or in case of a passe-partout to suspend it) the part d is brought in line with the frame, (see 'Fig. I,) I

and the slide h pushed up to hold the parts inplace.

If it is desirable to use the article as a standmirror, the slide h is pulled down to release of frame a, andsecured in such position by pushing up the slide, which will cause the spring handle or rest (I to bind on the frame 0..

The advantages of my invention are, mainly, the cheap and simple manner in which acombined hand and table or standing mirror, or like article, may be produced.

the partd, which is then sprung out of the groove, turned at any desired angle to the plane Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, with a mirror or like 5 frame, of a bifurcated handle adapted to inclose a portion of the frame, said handle pivoted on the frame at two opposite points, whereby it can be arranged in the plane of the frame, or in a plane intersecting the frame, so 10 as to form a brace therefor, substantially as specified.

2. The frame a, provided with the grooves c, in combination with the bifurcated springhandle (I, pivoted on the frame a, and a slide for causing the wire or bifurcated handle to 15 clasp the frame, substantially as specified.
