UNtTED- STATES PATENT I OFFICE. I
CHARLES M. HYATT AND ROBERT C, PRUYN, OF ALBANY, NEW'XORK,
ASSIGNORS TO THE EMBOSSING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
K DOUBLE REVERSIBLE SLATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,367, dated May 10,1881.
Application filed February 7, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES M. HYATT and ROBERT (J. PRUYN, of Albany, in the county ofAlbany and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Slates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to an improvement in hinged slates; and it consists, essentially, in a novel hinge and the application of the same to the slates, the advantages and construction of which are pointed out in detail hereinafter.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view, showing the two slates laid open. Fig. 2 is an edge view of same closed, showing the hinges. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section of the slates (opened) through one of the hinges, the end of the hinge secured to the slate A being folded instead of provided with a clip, and the slate B shown without the recess a, as modifications.
A and B indicate the two slates, which may be of any desirable form or construction; and D the preferred form of hinge, which consists of a strip or piece of flexible material, such as leather, rubber, or some textile fabric of proper length, having metal clips to on each end, the clips being supplied for the purpose of protecting the edges of the strip and to facilitate its firm and rapid attachment to the slates. In the opposite faces of one side of each slatefra'me arecut the recesses or pockets (1 0, running parallel with and separated a suitable distance from the edge of the frame. The slates being in a horizontal position with the edges of the sides, which are recessed opposite to each other, therecesses dwill be on the upper face of the side of the right-hand slate, and upon the lower face of the side of the left-hand slate in a corresponding position, while the recesses e are in a reverse position, being upon the upper face of the side of the left-hand slate and the lower face of the side of the right-hand slate.
In connecting the slates, the metal clip on one end of one hinge is secured in the recess 61 on the right-hand slate, and the other end is passed between the slates and secured in the (No model.)
recess 61 on the other slate, while one end of another hinge is secured in one recess, 6, and
the body of the hinge then passed between the slates in near relation to thehinge attached in the recesses d, its other end being secured in the other recess 0. Thus the slates are connected at two or more points byhiexible hinges which cross each other and perfnit either side of the slates to be folded toward the other. The recesses d 0 will be of sufiicient dimensions to snugly contain the clips forming the ends of the hinges; or, if the clips are not employed, to receive the end, whether folded or single, of the flexible strips. Thus, by means of the recesses, the ends of the hinges may be strengthened and protected and eft'ectually and rapidly secured to the slate without disfiguring the same or forming projections or enlargements on its sides. By preference the clips or ends of the hinges will be secured in the recesses by two small tacks, but any convenient means for attaining that end may be employed. That part of the slate between the outer edge of the recess and the edge of the frame will preferably be removed or recessed, as shown at a, to a depth equal to about one-half of the depth of the recesses d 6, whereby when the hingeis in position its doubled end or clip will not only be protected in the recesses 01 e, but its single portion will also be protected, and the wear of the hinge prevented and the slates retained in parallel positions.
In the employment of the recesses d e, the angle or outer wall, in, of the recess gives the clip, or the fold of the web, it the clip is not used, a binding-edge, which relieves the strain which would otherwise be exerted on the pins securing the hinge in place.
We are aware of the construction of the hinges shown in Letters Patent Nos. 190,171 and 228,559, and do not seek to include herein either of them or their equivalents.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The two slates supplied withthe recesses or pockets d e, and connected by flexible hinges, the ends of which are secured in the recesses, substantially as specified.
2. The two slates supplied with the recesses or pockets (1 e, and connected by hinges conlimprovement in folding slates, as above de- 10 sisting of a flexible strip, the ends of which are supplied with metal clips or folded and secured in the said pockets substantially as set forth.
3. The two slates supplied with the recesses 01, e, and a, and connected by flexible hinges secured in the recesses, substantially as set forth. In testimony that We claim the foregoing scrib'ed, We have hereunto set our hands this 18th day of January, 1881.
