UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
JAMES M. CARNAHAN,'OF BELLS CAMP, PENNSYLVANIA.
LAMP.
SPECIFICATION forniing part of Letters Patent No. 241,298, dated May 10, 1881.
Application filed March 10, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. CARNAHAN, a citizen of the United States, resident at Bells Camp, in the county oiMcKean and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and" exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part ot' this specification.
Figure l is a representation ot' a vertical section, and Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views.
This invention relates to lamp attachments; and it consists of a chamber con nected with the oil-receptacle, and having a circuitous passage, an overflow, an exitfor the gas,and a non-inflammable uid in the chamber, through which the gas escapes, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the annexed drawings, A is the reservoir, made round or iiat. Projecting from the bottom upward is a diaphragm, a., leaving a space, b, at the top, and from the top downward another, c, leaving a space, d, at the bottom. These diaphragms divide the reservoir into two chambers, B and C, and a connectingpassage, D.
E is a tube leading into the top ot' chamber B, screw-threaded at c, tapered at c', and having the passage E.
F is a hole made in the side of this chamber B, for use as an overflow or exit for the (No madel.)
non inilammable liquid both in lilling the chambers and during the passage ot' the gas, which escapes through the non-inflammable material whenever gas is generated in the reservoir. Some non-inflammable liuid is to be poured into chamber B until it is ou a level with hole F, as indicated by the dotted lines.
The reservoir thus described can be eonnected to the lamp in several ways. As shown in Fig. 2, its base may be screw-threaded, as at c2, and it may be inserted into the fillinghole of the lamp, having communication therewith by the tube f, leading from the bottom ot' chamber C; or it may be connected by a neck, g, to the collar G of the lamp, communication being had through the neck,'which is hollow to the bottom.
As a still further moditication, chamber C may be dispensed with and the reservoir connected to the collar at the top, the tube running from space b, and thus leading into the top of passage D.
I claim- As an improvement in lamp attachments, a chamber connected with the oil-receptacle and having a circuitous passage, an overiiow, an exit for the gas, and a non-inflammable Huid in the chamber through which the gas escapes, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J. M. GARNAHAN.
