ATTACHMENT FOR SIPHONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 691,021, dated January 14, 1902. Application filed January 3, 1901. Renewed October 2l, 1901. Serial No. 79,345. (Nomodel.)
T0 all whom it may con-ecrit:
Be it known that I, HENRY C. TULLEB, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and usefulImprovementin Attachments for Siphons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in an attachment for a siphonadapted to be inserted in a barrel, Cask, or other vessel and serving as a filter, the construction of said attachment being hereinafter described, and the novel features thereof pointed out in the claims.

Fig. 3 represents a top or plan view of another portion of my invention. Fig. 4 represents a vertical section thereof on line y y, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 represents a side elevation of the device in position in a barrel or other vessel.

Referring to the drawings, A designates a easing which is formed of the side B, the bottom C, the cap or top D, said side and bottom being closed and said top having inlet-openings E therein and the tubular stem or branch F with openings F above the bottom thereof, said stem being adapted to have connected with it the end of the limb of a siphon which is inserted within a barrel, keg, cask, or other vessel, it being seen that the casing A rests on the bottom of said vessel, and the open top D is accordingly above the same, whereby the iiuid to be Withdrawn may readily enter the casing A, the stem F, and the siphon, and thus be properly discharged, by the latter. The sediment, however, which is below the top, is prevented from entering said openings E, and so remains within the vessel, the ilui'd being accordingly filtered, there being surface siphoning, and the iluid flows downward into the casing and then upwardly through the branch F from below the top of said casing, so that the sediment cannot be drawn from the side of the casin g into the latter, the siphoning thus being in reversed order from that heretofore practiced.
In order to hold and sustain the limb of the siphon within the vessel, I utilize the bung of the same and form therein a vertical bore H, through which the relative limb of the siphon is snugly passed, it being somewhat embraced by the wall of said bore. In said wall there are vertical grooves or passages J, which are `in communication with said bore and extend the length of the same, so as to be in communication with the atmosphere and vessel, thus providing air-vents for the latter.
It will be seen that if the limb of the siphon outside of the vessel is disturbed it will not affect the limb within the same, owing to the holding nature of the bung, the casing A thus also remaining undisturbed.
The stem F may be soldered or otherwise secured to the bottom C and be additionally sustained by the top D in its passage therethrough.
If desired, the number of openings E may be increased or decreased and made of any suitable shape and size; but, as is evident, it may be entirely omitted.
Having thus described my invention,` what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A casing for the purpose described having a closed bottom, a closed side, and an inlet therefor only at the top of the same and a siphon-attaching branch which is passed through said cap, supported on the bottom of the casing, and having an inlet therein below said top.
2. An attachment for a siphon for preventing the entrance of sediment thereinto, consisting of a casing, the same having a closed side, a closed bottom and an open cap at top, the latter providing the only inlet into said casing, and a siphon-attaching branch which enters said casing and is doubly supported by said cap and the bottom of the casing'and having an inlet below said cap.
3. An attachment fora siphon for the purpose described consisting of a casing, having a closed bottom, a closed side, a perforated cap at top as the onlyinlet to said casing, and a siphon -connecting branch which passes through said cap, is continued downwardly therefrom into said casing and has an inletl below said cap.
