Description
COMB
c. LEWIS Filed Oct. 20, 1944 Oct. 29, 1946.
Czar/e: lewis 11%. ATTORNEY Patented Oct. 29, 1946 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
The invention relates to acomb and has to do particularly with a comb that is adapted to apply heat to the hair while straightening the same.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a comb in which the teeth are so designed as to provide a maximum amount of surface contact with the hair when the comb is being drawn through the hair.
Another object is to provide a comb having its teeth so arranged that the hair will be caused to follow a tortuous path as the comb is passed through it.
A still further object is to provide a hair straightening comb which is simple and rugged in construction and economical to manufacture.
The invention is described in the ensuing specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part thereof and in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the comb with parts broken out and in section; I
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary detail side elevation of the main central member of the comb;
Fig, 3 is a fragmentary detail side elevation partly in section of the member which forms the auxiliary side members of the comb;
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view on a larger scale and is taken on the line 44 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4 of a slightly modified form of the invention; and
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary bottom plan view.
Referring again to the drawing the reference numeral designates the handle of the comb and this handle is made of any suitable heat resisting material. The reference numeral ll designates the comb portion which is made of metal or some other suitable heat conductive material.
The comb has a main central member I2 which is provided with a stem 13 that is entered into and secured to the handle I0 in any suitable manner. The central member l2 has a back M from which projects a plurality of substantially long teeth I5. It will be noted from an inspection of Fig. 4 these teeth are quite wide so as to provide a substantial amount of surface contact for the hair as the comb is drawn through the hair. It will also be noted the teeth taper towards their ends thus providing for easy entry of the comb into the hair.
The upper portion of the back [4 is cut away between the end teeth 16 as indicated at H in Fig. 2. A yoke l8 fits in the cut away portion l1 and this yoke forms the auxiliary side members 19 of the comb. The auxiliary side members are each provided with a row of comparatively short teeth 20. The yokemay be secured to the main central member in any suitable manner. As indicated two rivets 2| may be utilized for this purpose.
One of the important features of the invention is that the teeth in the auxiliary side members are staggered in relation to the teeth in the main central member. This causes the hair to follow a tortuous passage as the comb is drawn through and greatly helps in the hair straightening operation. The foregoin is particularly illustrated in Fig. 6 of the drawing.
In the form illustrated inFig. the side members l9 are made separate and the back I4 of the main central member does not have the cut away portion I! but extends to the top of the side members. In all other respects the parts are identical.
In performing the hair straightening operation a suitable solution is applied to the hair and the comb is heated and passed through with the flat part of the comb being almost parallel to the scalp. The length of the teeth on the central portion and their shape permit of easy entry of the comb into the hair. The rounded yoke portion Will carry considerable heat and this is used in effect as an iron to apply pressure to the hair to complete the straightening thereof.
Changes in details of construction such as would occur to one skilled in the art are to be considered as coming within the spirit of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A comb comprising a main central member havin a back portion with a row of substantially long teeth extending therefrom, a pair of auxiliary side members secured to said back portion, each of said side members having a row of comparatively short teeth formed thereon, the ends of said short teeth terminating slightly beyond the bases of said long teeth and the short teeth being staggered in relation to the long teeth.
2. A comb comprising a main central member having a back portion with a row of substantially long teeth extending therefrom, said long teeth bein broad at their central regions and tapered towards their ends, a pair of auxiliary side members secured to said back portion, each of said side members having a row of comparatively short teeth formed thereon, the ends of said short teeth 45 terminating slightly beyond the bases of said long teeth and the short teeth being staggered in relation to the long teeth.
3. A comb comprising a main central member having a back portion with a row of substantially 50 long teeth extending therefrom, said back portion being cut away between the end teeth thereof,
a yoke resting in said cut away portion and secured to said back portion, said yoke forming a pair of auxiliary side members, each of said side 55 members having a row of comparatively short teeth formed thereon, the ends of said short teeth terminating slightly beyond the bases of said long teeth and the short teeth being staggered in relation to the long teeth.
