Description

1951 c. J. BENNER 2,536,415
HAIRPIN OPENER Filed Oct. 18, 1948 fivmwra. ink/em 4150mm,
Patented Jan. 2, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HAIRPIN OPENER Carroll 3. Benner, Long Beach, Calif., assignor of one-half to Abram Hortze, Long Beach, Calif.
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a hair pin opener to be used with those hair pins of a crimped type formed of spring steel, and which are commonly termed bobby pins.
An object of my invention is to provide a novel spreader or opener for crimped type hair pins which can be quickly and easily separated in my device so that they may be placed in the hair of the user.
An object of my invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and compact hair pin opener, consisting primarily of guide ears and a rib which directs the hair pin onto a cone, and as the hair pin is moved over the cone it is spread to the desired extent.
Another object of my invention is to provide a hair pin opener of the character stated which may be formed of a single sheet of metal, and stamped into a shape to include guides which direct the hair pin over a rib, the rib in turn extending into a cone which serves to spread the spring hair pins as the pins are moved over said cone. The hair pin opener may, however, be cast or molded if desired.
Still another object of my invention is to provide a novel hair pin opener of the character stated which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and effective in use.
Other objects, advantages and features of invention may appear from the accompanying drawing, the subjoined detailed description and' the appended claims.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my hair pin opener.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Figure 3 is an. enlarged sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, my hair pin opener l, is preferably formed of a single sheet of metal, and includes a conical body 2, which is wrapped around a suitable die and may be formed in the desired length, and diameter, to spread the hair pin the desired amount. The upper portion of the cone 2, is flattened as shown at 3, and extends into a rib 4. A trough 5, 6, is provided on each side of the rib 4, the purpose of which will be further described.
A pair of inclined ears 1 and 8, extend outwardly from the troughs 5 and 6 respectively, and these outwardly flared ears serve to direct the point of the pin inwardly into the troughs 5 and 6, and with the lower portion of the hair pin straddling the rib 4. This position is shown at 9, in Figure 3. Once the point of the hair pin has straddled the rib 4, it is then pushed downwardly onto the fiat portion 3, and thereafter is pushed over the cone 2, starting from the position shown at ID in Figure 1.
As the hair pin is moved over the cone 2, it will be spread the desired amount and can then be placed in the hair by the user. If desired, a fixed magnet l I can be mounted in the lower end of the cone 2, for the purpose of picking u the metallic hair pins or removing these hair pins from the hair if desired. The magnet may also be used to hold the hair pin opener in a tray I2, this tray being adapted to hold the hair pins before they are opened.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A hair pin opener comprising a conical body, said body continuing at its small end into a rib, a pair of ears forming guide means, each of said ears being located at opposite sides of said rib, and said ears projecting outwardly from the rib.
2. A hair pin opener comprising a conical body, said body continuing at its small end into a rib, a pair of ears forming guide means, each of said ears being located at opposite sides of said rib. and said ears projecting outwardly from the rib, said ears being secured to said rib by a member forming a trough between said rib and each of said ears.
