' vns claims. (01.132-345/ The present invention relates lto hair curlers and more particularly to an improved hair (curler which is simple and economical tomanufacture and which is easily operated by the user.
The present invention relates tor hair curlers be wound.
Preferably the curl `bar is hollow anda-*may be perforated, and a suitable gripper may be employed whereby one 'end ofthe curl may be secured to the lbar. In order to preventcthe curl from unwinding from the bar it is necessary to provide some means which will restrain'the uncurling motion,v and in the past this has been accomplished by a wire member secured to the bar and gripping member; kSucharrangement does not permit the curl `to be'woundtightly against the head of the person since in winding it is not possiblev to judge with great accuracy how many turns of the bar are required to form a curl and hence'a fixed restrainingmember may be a fraction of a turn removed from the most desirable restraining position. Other devices have provided a hair pin like member'inserted in a hollow bar-but such device has certain disadvantages, particularly when used with a perforated hollow :bar inthat it is difiicult to insert the device into the bar'and the rough interior of the bar does not readily permit the placementofthe wire member in the most desired restraining position. f
providinga curling barv having lat the end thereof an extension portion adapted to receive arrestraining member which is resiliently retained in the desired position so as to have adequate inherent rotation resisting action relative-to the bar. Y
It therefore is an object of the present invention to provide an improved curling bar with a restraining or lock member'whichobviates certain disadvantages/of the devices of 'the prior.V art.
Other and further objects of the invention subsequently will become apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hair curler y in operating position with a curl formed thereabout;
` Figure 2 is an end view of the curl shown in Figure 1; Y Y y Figure 3 is one embodiment of the present invention;
Figures 4 and 5 are detailedl views of a portion of the type comprising arbar on which a curl may In accordance with the present invention the v abjove mentioned disadvantagesfare overcorneby` ofthe device shownin FigureB explanatory of the construction and voperation thereof;
Figure 6r shows the construction used where the curling bar, has a `greater diameter thanv that shown in Figure 3; and
Figure '7 shows another form of the locking or restraining member. 'l
Referring to the drawing a curler i0 is shown in Figure 1 having'thereon acurl I2 held in position by arestraining or locking member I4. In
,winding the curl the curlerris rotated in the direction of the arrows shown in Figure 1 and when the curl has'been completed the locking member I4 is rotated in an opposite direction to that shownA bythe. arrows inthe figure.
,The details ofthe curler I0 and the locking member I4 are illustratedv in Figures 3, 4, ,and 5 from which it becomes apparentthatthe curler I0 is provided with a hollow perforated bar portion I6 which is pivotallyconnected at I8 to a gripping member 20. The gripping member 20 is 'biased 'towardthe `bar l'by a suitable spring 22 mounted adjacent Athe 'handle portions of the curler. At theopen end ofthe curler I0 there is mounted in the hollow bar I6 ian extension member 24 which' formost sizesof curlers preferably is of Vhollow construction.` ,The' locking member I4 is mounted on the outer extremity of the extension member `2|Iby a member 26 comprising a resilient helical spring having a' stop portion 2K8 Y adapted to engage the endl fof the extension 24. Inforder to-provide'the desired vdegree, of resistance against rotation :between the lockingv member I4 and the curler I at least one of the con- YVolumens 3o of thehelicai. spring ze isfbffset slightly so that its .center does not coincide with the aXis of Athe remainder of the convolutions.
, Figure 4 illustrates how the outer extremity of the reduced'diameter extension portion 24 is inserted into the helical spring portion 26 wherey it isabout to engage theslightly displaced convolution 3D. In Figure 5 it will be seen that thecon- `volution 30 is in'substantial alignment with the Van extension member 24a is inserted within the curler Illa so that the reduced end portion 2'5 thereof extends beyond the end of the curling bar |6a. The diameter of the extension portion 25 is the same diameter as the extension portion 24 of Figure 3 so that the same size locking member I4 may be used interchangeably with different size curlers.
In Figure 7 there is shown a curler l0 having an extension .24 embodying the same general structure as that shown in Figure 3. The locking member 30 has a helical spring gripping portion 32 one convolution of which may bedisplaced in the manner of the convolution 30 of the previous embodiment, and the locking member terminates in a handle portion 34. The handle portion 34 will facilitate the rotation of the locking member 30 when the curling operation takes place as was explained in connection with Figure 1.
While for the purpose of illustration and description, certain specific embodiments of the present invention have been shown, it is to be understood that the invention is not to be limited thereby since obviously such variations may be made as are commensurate with the scope of the appended claims.
The present invention is hereby claimed as follows:

A hair curler comprising a hollow bar on which a strand of hair may be wound, an extension member having a portion thereof rigidly 'mounted within said hollow, bar and extending rigidly mounted within said hollow bar and having a portion extending beyond the end ofvsaid bar, and a lock member rotatably carried by said extension member and having an arm spaced from the surface of said bar to overlie the curl and a resilient portion in engagement with said extension member to resist rotation of said arm relative to said bar, said lock member being adapted to be moved to an adjusted position to maintain the strand lin wound condition.
5. A hair curler comprising a hollow bar on which a strand of hair may be wound, gripping` which a strand of hair may be wound, an extension member positioned at the end of said bar, said extension member being of lesser diameter than said bar, and a lock member to maintain the strand in wound condition, said lock member being carried on said extension member by a helically wound generally cylindrical shaped spring portion having at least a portion of one convolution thereof off-center so that the center 'thereof is no-t coincident with the center of the remainder of the member, said lock member being mounted by said spring for rotation to an adjusted position to maintain the strand in wound condition.
'7. A hair curler comprising a hollow bar on which a strand of hair may be wound, said bar having an extension portion beyond the portion on which the strand is wound, and an adjustable locking member 'adapted to be moved to adjusted position Vrelative to said bar to maintain the strand in wound condition, said locking member comprising an exterior arm portion spaced from the surface of said bar to overlie the curl and a resilient portion mounted on 'the exterior extension of ysaid bar so as to have inherent rotation resisting relation therewith normally to retain said locking member in adjusted position.
8. A hair curler comprising a hollow bar on which a strand of hair is to be wound, said bar having an extension portion beyond the portion on which the strand is wound a demountable wire locking member adapted to maintain the strand in wound condition comprising a wire arm portion spaced from the surface of said bar to overlieV the curl and a resilient coil spring portion mounted'on the exterior of an extension of said bar Vso as to have inherentl rotation resisting relation therewith.
