J. C. MOPPITT.-
Gar Coupling.
No. 240,83 Patented May 3,1881,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES C. MOFFITT, OF WYOMING, ILLINOIS.
CAR-COUPLlNG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,836, dated May 3, 188 1.
Application filed March 3, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES 00x Mornrrr, of Wyoming, in the county of Stark, in the State of Illinois, have invented an Improved Gar Goupling; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which like letters of reference refer to like parts, and in which- Figure 1 represents a sectional elevation at the dotted line m; Fig. 2, a sectional elevation at m, but with the hook-finger H A up instead of down; Fig. 3, an end elevation; Fig. 4, a plan Fig. 5, a plan of the link-holder J J K.
B B T G constitute the frame-work of this coupling. The T-shaped bar Mis fastened to the sill of the car, and has the different holes R R R that the coupling may be adapted for different heights of cars by the shifting of the bolt R and of the coupling up or down.
The hook-finger H A is pivoted at P to the lever D, and supported in a raised position by the two projections F F. The lever D is pinned at P to the sides B B of the coupling, and at P to the end of the sliding rod 0. To the hook-finger HA; at the opening 0, a cord or chain can be attached, to enable the brakeman to raise the hook-finger H A without having to descend from the top of the car.
The link-holder J J K (shown in plan by Fig. 5) is exhibited as holding the link S in Fig. 1, and in Fig. 2 as lying down in the slots made to receive it. The notches n n in the sliding rod 0 allow the link-holderJ J K to be lifted up as high as, but no higher than, the position shown in Fig. 1.
The right-angled slots E E receive the two projections F F when the hookfinger H A is moved forward a little, so that it then has nothing to support it in the position shown in Fig. 2, but it immediately falls.
The method of operating this car-coupling is as follows: When the two cars are to be coupled together, the link-holderJ J K of one coupling is lifted up to the position shown in Fig. 1, the link S pressed backnnder it, and the hook-finger -H A let down to the position of Fig. 1. In the other coupling the hookfinger H A is raised up and back till it is supported by the projections F F, as in Fig. 2. As the two cars are now brought together the projecting link S of the one coupling enters coupling No. 2, the end of the link S pushes against the end of the sliding rod 0, and, by
means of the lever D, moves the hook-finger H A forward till, the slots E E coming over the projections F E, it is no longer supported, but falls by its own weight. Now, when the cars go to separate from the rebound the link S pulls the hook-finger forward till the projection T is held under the edge of the cross-bar T. By this means the hook-finger H Ais kept from flying up and releasing the link S. A pull back and up at an angle of forty-five degrees brings the hook-finger to the position shown in Fig. 2, thereby liberating the link S and setting the hook-finger H A ready for coupling again.
What I claim as my invention, and for which I desire Letters Patent, is as follows:
1. In a car-couplin g, the combination of the hook-fingerH A, right-angled slots EE, lever D, sliding rod 0, projections F F, and the coupling frame-work B B G, as set forth.
2. In a car-couplin g, the combination of the hook-finger H A, lever D, sliding rod 0, framework B B G, and the link-holder J J K, as set forth.
3. In a car-coupling, the frame-work B B G,
I in combination with the T-shaped bar M, bolt R, and holes R R It substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing invention I have hereunto set my hand this 17th day of February, 1881.
JAMES COX MOFFITT.
