J. F. WOLFE CIRCULAR SAW AND DADO COVER Filled Se t, 20, 1945 3 sheets-she ts Inventor J07 Mama Patented Sept. 3, 1946 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,406,979 CIRCULAR SAW AND DADO COVER John F. Wolfe, Lapeer, Mich. Application September 20, 1943, Serial No. 503,133
1 Claim.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in covers for circular saws and dados, and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, novel means for protecting tools of this character from the elements, in addition to protecting workmen against injury.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide a cover of the aforementioned character which is free or independent of the tool or table and which, through the medium of unique supporting means, may be expeditiously raised to permit access to be had to the saw or dado.
Still another important object of the invention is to provide a cover of the character set forth for saws and dados which will prevent sawdust from being thrown into the air to be inhaled by the sawyer and other workmen.
A still further important object of the invention is to provide a circular saw or dado cover which may be expeditiously adjusted vertically to meet various conditions.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a circular saw or dado cover of the character set forth which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly efficient and reliable in use, compact, and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a cover constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a view in vertical section through the device, taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view, the end portion of the guide being broken away.
Figure 4 is a view in side elevation of the upper portion of the guard.
Figure 5 is a view principally in vertical section, showing the device mounted for use out of doors.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that reference numeral l designates generally a substantially rectangular, skeletonized, box-like guide of suitable material, preferably metal. On an indoor installation, the guide l is suspended from a ceiling 2 through the medium of hangers 3.
As illustrated to advantage in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawings, the guide 1 comprises pairs of upper and lower transverse bars l between which pairs of upper and lower longitudinal bars 5 extend. Thus, what may be considered a vertical passage through the guide I is provided, which passage slidably accommodates a hanger 6.
The hanger 6 is in fiat tube 1 of suitable material having in its opposed side walls vertically spaced openings 8. A pin 9 is insertable selectively in the openings 8 in the upper portion of the hanger 6 for suspending said hanger in the guide I. As best seen in Figure 2 of the drawings, the pin 9 is operable in the guide I and engageable with the bars 5 thereof. Thus, the pin 9 positively limits the vertical sliding movement of the hanger 6 in the guide I, in addition to suspending said hanger therein. Suspended from the lower end of the hanger 6 is a vertically adjustable and slidable guard Ill. The guard i0 is in the form of a shield or hood for the reception of a circular saw or dado ll mounted for operation on a table l2. Rising from the guard H1 is a flat shank l3 which is slidable in the lower portion of the hanger 6. Toward this end, the shank l3 has formed therein a vertical slot M for communication with the openings 8. The slot l l'accommodates a pin [5 which is insertable, selectively in the openings 8 in the lower portion of the hanger 6 for suspending the guard l0 therefrom for vertical sliding movement. Above the slot Hi, the shank i3 is further provided with an opening it for registry with the openings 8 for receiving the pin l5 when vertical sliding movement of the guard I0 is not desired. The pins 9 and I5 are slightly tapered to permit them to be tightly inserted in the openings 8.
It is thought that the operation of the device will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, the guard l0 is adapted to be suspended by gravity over the tool II in a manner to cover and protect same. If desired, the supporting structure for the guard in may be expeditiously adjusted to permit said uard. to rest on the table l2. The guard may be secured in this position against raising and exposing the saw by inserting the pin 9 below the guide I and engaging the pin I5 in the opening 16. However, with the elements in the position of Figure 2 of the drawings, the guard Ill may be expeditiously raised to permit access to be had to the circular saw or dado ll. Upward movement of the guard III in the hanger II is governed by the length of the slot l4 and.
the form of a substantially I vertical movement of said hanger 6 in the guide I I is positively limited by the pin 9.
In Figure 5 of the drawings, the device is shown in use for out-door work. When thus used, a supporting structure I8 is erected adjacent the side of the table H) which is remote from the sawyer. The structure It? includes a pair of posts 20, from the upper end ortions of which arms 2| project horizontally over the table l9. Suitable braces or struts 22 are provided for the posts 29 and the arms 2|. The guide I is suspended from the free end portions of the arms 2| over the saw or dado 23 through the medium of hangers 24. In other respects this embodiment of the invention is substantially similar in construction and operation to that illustrated in Figures 1 to 4, inclusive, of the drawings.
It is believed that the many advantages of a circular saw and dado cover constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although preferred embodiments of the device ar as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that further changes and modifications in the details of construction may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
A circular saw cover comprising a skeleton boxlike guide including upper and lower transverse bars, and vertically spaced pairs of upper and lower longitudinal bars extending between the transverse bars and forming therewith a vertical passage in said guide, means for suspending the guide from a support, a substantially flat tubular hanger slidably disposed in the passage and provided with vertically spaced openings therein, a pin insertable in openings in said hanger above and below the lower pair of longitudinal bars, selectively, said pin when inserted in openings above said lower pair of longitudinal bars suspending said hanger from said lower pair of bars for adjustment of the hanger upwardly in said passage and being adapted to coact with the upper pair of longitudinal bars to limit upward adjustment of said hanger, said pin when inserted in openings below the lower pair of longitudinal bars coacting with said lower pair of bars to prevent upward adjustment of the hanger, a guard, a substantially flat shank rising from said guard and vertically adjustable slidably in the lower part of the hanger, said shank having an opening and a vertical slot therein vertically spaced apart and adapted to be registered, respectively, with openings in said hanger, and
, a second pin insertable selectively in the opening and slot in the shank and in openings in the hanger with which said opening and slot in the shank may be registered to thereby connect the shank to the hanger against vertical movement relative thereto or for vertical slidable adjustment in said hanger.
