This invention relates to means or devices for use in marking textile and like fabrics or material with dots or indicating'marks, or dotted or lsimilar lines, preparatory to smocking the same. The material to be smocked ordinarily has such dots or indicating marks applied to it by trans- `fer from a printed or prepared sheet. e

The object of the invention is to devise and construct simple and eiiicient means which will obviate the necessity `for the employment of such transfers, and by the use of which the material can be easily and quickly marked-,las by a pencil or the like, with the dots or similar indicating marks. According to the invention I provide a base or foundation plateystrip Ior member, upon which the fabric is laid or placed to be marked, the upper surface of which is corrugated or provided with a number or arrangement of preferably parallel and regularly `spaced upstanding ribs or projections, so that when a pencil or the like is drawn across the 'fabric upon the plate or `member, transversely of the corrugations or ribs,` dots or marks are made on' the lfabric at the points where it lies upon the 'crestsof the oo'rrugations or the upper surfaces or edges of the ribs;

A ruler or straightedge is' provided for ruling the line of dots onthe fabric, and such ruler may be in one piece with or hingedly or resiliently attached to the base or foundation plate or a holder therefor, in such away that the fabric can be laid upon the base or lfoundation plate or member and held in position thereon by pressure appliedtot'he ruler.

A Xed or movable guide strip or part may be cci-operatively combined with the ruling means to indicate the distance apart of thelines of dots being marked. Suc-h strip or part may also, if desired, be used as an additional ruling means.

The corrugated or ribbed base or foundation plate or `member may be detachably arranged in a holder to allow of plates or members having differently spaced corrugations or ribs being em ployed in such holder.

A practical form of .the invention Will now be described in conjunction with the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which the ruling means is shown constructed integral with a holder in which a detachable base or foundation plate, strip or member is fitted; a guide strip also ybeing shown movable upon and in relation to the ruling means. The upperk portion 6 4of the holder I -is cut or shaped for a suitable distance from the front edge, near bothV ends, as indicated at i3, and the central portion ,between the cuts I3 is bent inwardly beneath the remaining `portion I4, as indicated atv l5, to` form the.ruling edge 4, and expose portion of the upper corrugated surface Il of the foundation plate or strip 2. The portion I4 is shaped to provide a depression I8 on the underside in which the bent or doubled portion i5 lies flush with the upper portion S at the ends thereof. The upper portion 6, due to the resiliency afforded by the loop 8, ordinarily is angularly disposed to the lower portion 'i-see Fig. l-but lies parallel therewith when pressed down to hold the fabric in position on. the corrugated plate or strip 2.

The guide strip 5 is in the form of a longitudinally centrally folded strip Vof metal having bifurcated ends I9 in which frictionally engage the to hold the fabric firmly on said plate or strip 2.V

The line of dots is now ruled, as by a pencil passed quickly over the fabric and in engagementwith the ruling edge 4. 'I 'he guide strip 5 may be so set or arranged, by sliding it into the re quired position, that when either of its longi tudinal edges 22 or 23 is on or near the ruled line of dots, the next line of dots to beruled will be at the desired distance therefrom. The material to be marked can be moved within the device as itis marked, or alternatively said material can be pinned down or fixed upon a table or other surface and the devicemoved in relation thereto. ,Making the corrugated plate, strip or member 2` detachable permits of different corrugated or ribbed plates or members beingl inserted inthe part or holder I having corrugations or ribs spaced at different distances apart, for, providing different arrangements or patterns of dots.

What I4 claim as my invention and desire to protect, by Letters Patent is:

1. Means of the nature indicated, including a member having a corrugated surface upon which the'teXtile or similar fabric is laid to be marked by drawing a pencil onthe like across itJ transversely of the corrugations,;and a holder carrying such corrugated memberV and constructed with Yruling means above said member.

2. Means of the nature indicated, including a member having a ribbed surface upon which the textile or similar fabric lis laid to be markedby drawing a pencil or the like across it transversely of theribs, and a holder carrying such ribbed member and constructed with ruling means above said member. 3. Means of the nature indicated, i cluding a holder having a lower portion and an upper portion resiliently connected to said lower portion,

and 1a detachable member having a corrugated upper surface and carried by the lower portion, upon which member the textile or similar fabric ise'laid and marked by drawing a pencil or the like across ttransversely of the corrugations,

said upper portion lying above the corrugated surface and being constructed to provide a ruling edge transversely of the corrugations.

4. Means of the nature indicated, including a holder having a lower portion and an upper por-I tion resiliently connected to said lower portion, and a detachable member having a ribbed upper it transversely of the ribs, said upper portion lying with the upper portion ofthe holder at above the ribbed surface and being constructed to provide a ruling edge transversely of the ribs. 5. Means of the nature indicated, including a holder having a lower portionyandan `upper portion resiliently connected to said lower. portion, a detachable member having a corrugated upper surface and carried by the lower portion, upon which member the textile or similar fabric is laid and marked b'y drawing a pencil or the like across it transversely of the corrugations, said upper portion lying above the corrugated surface and being constructed to provide a ruling edge transversely of the corrugations, and adjustable guide means movable upon saidA upper portion which actA to indicate the distance apart of the lines of dots or marks being made.

6. Means of the nature indicated, including a holder having a lower portion and an uppervporf tion and a loop resiliently connecting said lower and upper portions, said upper portion being shaped to provide a space and aruling edge at one side of said space, a strip member detachably connected to and carried by the lower portion of the holder and having parallel ribs onthe upper surface thereof transversely of which the 'ruling edge is positioned, and an adjustable guide strip bifurcated at the ends and engaging at such ends the ends of the space therein. l 'e 1 '7. Means of the nature indicated, including-a member having a corrugated base portionupon which textile or similar fabric is laid to be marked by drawing a, pencil or the like across it transversely of the corrugations, an upper portion lying above said base portion and constructed with a ruling edge, and means resiliently connecting said base and upper portion at one end. g

Means of the nature indicated, including a member having a corrugated base portion upon which textile or similar fabric is laid to be marked by drawing a pencil or the like across it transversely of the corrugations, an upper portion lying above said base portion and constructed with a ruling edge, and a loop resiliently connecting said base and upper portion at one end.

9. Means of the nature indicated, including a' member having a corrugated base portion upon which textile or similar fabric is laid to be marked by drawing a pencil or the like across it transversely of the corrugations, an upper portion lying above said base portion and constructed vwith a ruling edge, anda loop resilientlyv connecting said base and upper portion at one end, and an adjustable spacing device, movable upon said` upper portion, which acts to indicate the distance apart of vthe lines of dots or marks being made.
