"1 With a V.-type,b.e 1t, of., the, formshownin, Fig. 1 in which the, belt is formed wi th, ,three U -shaped over, the cone suriacesorgrooves of sheaves, so
'that' the belt, in travelling around .the sheaves, V will remain at all timesfin the same. position may rid'e in 1 the ysliapegg groove of a pulley. or
pulley. or sheave haying zontal axis" of rotation.
As shown in Fig. 1, the arrangement of the pulley or sheave 24 with respect to the belt is such that the belt is supported by sheave 24 in a horizontal flight. At the end of such horizontal flight either a pulley or sheave 23 or a pulley or sheave 22 can be utilized to guide the belt in a flight 01' a ular to'the longitudinal center line through rib direction difierent from the flight of the belt past the pulley or sheave 24. Thus, if it is desired that the flight of the belt should be in a direction.
towards the left, then the belt is trained through the V-shaped groove of pulley or sheave 23. On the other hand, if it is desired that the flight of 1 formthereof, it isnot desired to be. limited therescope of the invention. The invention may be ries of ribs [2, l3 and I4 and by arrangingthe pulleys or sheaves 22, 23 and24, respectively, in
the manner heretofore referred to, the belt will beguided by the sheave'sin anumber of'directions without any tendency for, twists being formed in the belt. In other words, assuming that v the belt of Fig. 1 is endless and passes over a series' of sheaves arranged with horizontal and vertical axes of rotation, the belt will make a com pletecircuit around all of the sheaves with the two ribs l2 and M always vertically disposed, in the manner shown in Fig. 1, and with the 'rib l3 always horizontally disposed.
Tneform of V-belt shown in 1 may have a portion 25 formed on the main body thereof opposite to the rib I3. This portion 26 provides means by which a flight or some such element (not'shown) can be secured to the body of the belt when, desired. i
The only difference in the two belts shownin Figs. 4 and 7, respectively, is in the configuration of the main body of each belt. 7
, In the form shown in Fig. the two ribs [5, j 16 project outwardly from the. main body of the belt and the main body has two surfaces 3| and 32 arranged at right angles to each other on the opposite sides of the body from. the ribs, respectively. Thus, surface 31 is arranged perpendicl5 and surface 32 is perpendicular to the longitudinal center line through rib Hi. This construction provides a heavy main body portion for "the belt, useful when the belt is arranged to transmit considerable power. I on the other hand, in'the form of V-belt shown in Fig. 7, the cross sectional area of 'thebelt is In both forms of belts shown in Figs. 4 and '7,
theribs are adapted to engage the cone surfaces of pulleys or sheaves 34, having vertical axes' of rotation,'and the ribs it are adapted to engage the cone surfaces'of pulleys or sheaves 35, having horizontal axes of rotation. With the belt trained or guided by the pulleys or sheaves 34, 35, no twisting will take place and the two ribs l5, [6,
will always remain in the position shown.
The form of V-belt shown in Fig. 10 is particuof. The present d which come within the meaning and range of larly adapted to be used with sheaves or pulleys arranged so that the flight of the belt can ex tend through a'series of horizontal and vertical to since changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the, spirit and embodied in other specific forms without de- 7 essential characteristics thereembodiments are therefore. to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, the scope of the invention being parting from the indicated by the appended claims rather than by the foregoing description, and all changes equivalency of the claims are therefore intended to be embraced therein. V
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. A V belt of the type described comprising a plurality of radially extending V'-shaped ribs formed lengthwise thereof and coextensive the length thereof, all of said ribs being substantially I similar in form and size and being arranged at an angle of approximately with respect to each other, each of said ribs having three walls, including tWo inclined side Walls and an outer end wall, the adjacent side walls of adjacent ribs forming a reentrant angle, the two side walls of each rib being inclined at substantially similar angles with respect to the radial center line of the rib and the outer end wall of each rib. being arranged substantially at right angles the radial center line of the rib.
2. A V belt of the type described comprising;- a body having three radially extending V-shaped ribs formed lengthwise thereof and coextensive. the length thereof, all of said ribs being sub-. stantially similar in form and size and being;
arranged with the longitudinal center lines of;
and an outer end wall, the adjacent side walls' of adjacent ribs forming a reentrant angle, the: two side walls of each rib being inclined at substantially similar angles with respect to the radial center line of the rib and the outer end wall of each rib being arranged substantially at right angles to the radial center line of the rib.
. 3. A- belt comprising a plurality of radially extending V-shaped ribs formed lengthwise thereof and co-extensive the length thereof, an adjacent pair of ribs being arranged with their radial center lines disposed at an angle less than with respect to each other, said ribs each .including side walls inclined at substantially similar angles with respect to the center line of the rib, adjacent side wallsof adjacent ribs being angularly disposed with respect to each other, to-form a reentrant angle greater than the angle between the radial center lines ofsaid adjacent ribs.
